Wow,,, I 've seen those bikes, are they easy to steer..?
Once you get the hang of it, ain't nothing but a thing. The front wheel drive took a little bit to master, but it's great in that it gets your upper body involved, which translates to more power to the drive wheel. Not quite as good as standing up on a regular road bike, but getting close. Only downfall is on steep grades, if the pavement is dirty, or uneven, you can spin the front wheel.
detdrbuzzard: a lot of those old Schwinns got snapped up by the scenester kids and converted to fixed gear bikes.
I agree, though, that a good, lightweight road bike can be found on Craigslist for pretty good prices. A friend of mine picked up an aluminum frame Trek with a carbon fiber fork and rear triangle and decent level components for 500. It hadn't been ridden much and has worked out real well for him.
Ride the heck out what you got, littlebeaver, but be on the lookout for your next ride. Look around locally for a riding club, too. There are social clubs that aren't racing oriented you can get into. The main reason is to cut the learning curve. You'll learn where to ride, how to ride and so much more than you can ever imagine.
