My last '78 had good compression, but when I filled the coolant system (luckily have learned to start out with water), it poured right out #4 exhaust port. Blown head gasket turned into a check valve? The bad gasket was obvious when the head came off.
It is possible to get oil in the water through a screwed up head gasket, but not very likely. And yes, POs can do some very strange things - like putting a normal fine thread bolt in place of a banjo bolt.
