CASTROLL has been a favorite oil in motorcycles for years.Especially brit bikes, however CASTROLL has been sold over and over and over again in recent years, currently ownded by BP,previously DRYDEN preiviously....Who knows if the formula and refining has changed.

As for FRAM filters,as a WIX saleman I love to cut apart and compare filters to the FRAM becuase it is so popular, yet so cheaply made.Even my cheaper store label filters compare better. You can even feel the weight differance.
There are less folds, meaning less filtering material, plastic bypass springs and thinner metal all around.

Ofcourse they do have that cool little grippy thing.Great marketing.

As for me,I am a long way from a honda(or any other bike)dealer so its not to conveinant to by honda items.I use to load up when I was there, but they always give me EMGO filters anyway so I use the WIX that I buy at cost through work ofcourse. For oil, this year I bought several gallons of yammy oil becuase they where no longer a yammy dealer and discounted it a good amount. So I bought it all.I dont own a yammy, but I am more concernend about "motorcycle oil" rather than brand. With four bikes that should last me a year or two.

I tried a lot of different types of oil's, Castrol, Amsoil, Valvoline and other brands, the one I found that works the best is Rotella Syn. I do long trips on my bikes, 10,000 KLM between oil change and no problem. I do change the filter at about 5,000 KLM and add some oil. For the filter, I like to use the Honda filter, I pay more for the filter, but I know it's made for the bike.

So flash2002 How do you know it works better. Glue me in.
Hi Warnett  , the reason I said it works better for me is, I tried dino oil, it would brake down to fast, I would notice the shifting was different after 1 to 2 thousand miles. With the synthetic oil, I notice I could drive longer 7,000 plus miles and still shift smooth and the motor seems to run smoother and cooler. It doesn't have to be Rotela, it's just cheaper for me and does a good job. I have a Gold Wing 1800 that I travel with, I do lots of milage and change the oil at around 10,000 KLM and no problem, I do change the filter at 5,000. I'm not saying it's good for every bike but for my Valkyrie and Gold Wings, it works great. Synthetic does last longer than dino :good: . When I went out West this summer, I got cought in Chicago traffic, Hot Hot Hot and the temperature guage was all the way to the top, pass the red and the bike never quit, maybe the oil maybe not.

Flash2002 It does sound like the Synthetic is the best way to go. I was leaning that way. I was thinking about going to a blend first and then to full Synthetic. I'm no where near a Honda dealer so I'm trying to decide what brand of filter to use. I bought this bike and found out the oil was changed 2 years ago but, only has 300 miles on the oil. I'm changing it anyway just haven't deceide what oil and filter to use yet. Thanks for all your input.

I've always wondered if it's necessary to change oil by age not mileage, like the oil change places suggest 3 months or 3000 miles between changes.
I can't see that oil goes bad just sitting, that's what it does while in the bottle.

I think it has to do with condensation. When the oil is in the bottle it is sealed

From what I read, if the oil has mileage and then you park the bike for a long period, the oil produces an acid which can eat at it and cause pitting on the surface of the bearings and cylinder. Now, I'm not sure if this is 100% true, but why take a chance?

Thats what I'm thinking. Ok per owners manual. Change oil and filter before storage. out of storage change oil if its been 4 months or more in storage.

Engine oil can indeed create bad juju when sitting idle in an engine. It can turn acidic and cause corrosion on steel/iron and aluminuminum components....especially if it is "old" engine oil. All of the tech says if your are storing a vehicle for more than a month or so, you should change the engine oil and filter, then start and run it just long enough to circulate the oil thru the engine. Then you should change the oil before the first start when it's time to waken it from it's slumber.

I'll admit that I have NEVER done this, even tho I agree it's a good idea.

I dont agree.
It is important to change the oil before storage but I have yet to see an "expert" (HONDA techision, tech editer,or such)even suggest that it needs to be changed after winter. That oil should be good and ready to go.
I park all my stuff ready to go for the spring.Lawnmower, bikes, yard equipment or boat motor.

Thats what the owners manual says. If in storage more then 4 months change it again when taken it out of storage.

Yes it does! However, more than 30 years later and an untold amount of collective mileage and there are a tremendous amount of these Wings still on the road with very little engine damage. My '81 engine had over 169K miles on it and it was beat to death in many different ways, ended up with worn bearings, journals and wrist pins, but even at 169K miles and all of those problems, it still sounded like this:

(I speak for myself, but, I kinda think most of us didn't follow the manual all 30 some years :hihihi: )

Tory is right, I do the same, I change the engine oil and differential oil and store the bike for the winter. In the spring I'm ready to ride. One thing I read about syntechtic oil long time ago is, it sticks to the cylinder walls and metal parts , dino oil runs off with time leaving the metal bare, is this true ??? With all the years of driving bikes and doing it the same way, something must be working.

Hey guys I'm just saying what the book says. Doesn't mean I would either. Besides when this book was written in 1983 oil was a hell of a lot cheaper.
