The oil drain on a 1200 is on the rear of the engine versus earlier motors in the pictures I've seen. This being the first time I've torn into one of these flat fours, my sometimes illogical mind is wondering why about a pint of oil dumped on me and the ground when I removed the cover this morning. Also, if oil is suppose to be in there, why would Honda put a seal on the engine case where the water pump shaft goes thru to connect to the oil pump? Is oil just suppose to be in there or did I just luck out and catch it before it shifted to meltdown mode?

No, it's on the rear right side almost next to exhaust , 17mm plug. I drained it two days ago, so that means if if's suppose to be there and didn't come out, then when you change oil, about a pint of dirty oil gets mixed with the new. I would have expected some of it, very little, if the oil drain was on the front. I don't know, Honda starting letting oil circulate around the stator I know on this model and maybe the 84 & 85, don't know bout them. It's just got me confused at the moment, but I stay confused most of the time
