Two gauges I plan to add this winter: vacuum and oil pressure.

soooooooooooooo.... where is a good place to tie into manifold vacuum? I will try for a tidy install, if at all possible...

the oil pressure sender is a clunky mutha... ideas on best place to mount it??

All ideas cheefully (mostly) considered!

thanks - John

I connected a vacuum gauge to barb fittings I'd tapped into the carb intakes for a earlier cruise control.
Another way is put a hose fitting on one of the sync screws.

The oil sender could go in one of the oil gallery allen head plug holes using whatever adapter or if there's room where the old sensor is or tee off it.

I have an oil guage installed in the console between the (oem) radio an voltmeter guages are.I made the hole and fitted it right in were the cb guage should have been. But it can be mounted in numerous places were you would think is the most confortable for your view.Took one of the allen head plugs drill a hole thru it and threaded to the size of the brass adapter which happened to be a 10mm and connected to that the nut that squeezes the round brass fitting that tightens the plastic hose. The plug I choose was the one pointing backwards on the right side rear case close to the brake pedal.there is a second one on that same side at the bottom pretty close to it,but I didn't want to mess with that since its in a difficult positition and besides that pointing downwards could be more prone to leaking. Its been on the bike for a long time now.No problem so far.I would have liked a braided hose for toughness, but never got to it.

On the right side opposite to were the radio is on the left & on top of the plastic pocket cover (also on the left)was another of my options I was thinking at that time but considering that my guage was 2"in. diameter would have fitted kinda snug.I see by the pictures yours look like 2-1/2 maybe 3"in right Dan?

This is the area that I am considering putting the new gauges; I'll make housings for each side and paint them flat black...

Dan - They are 2" gauges.....
Somehow got the post confused thinking it was dan's project :Doh2: :smilie_happy: .The positions on each side makes it look awesome KYWinger really :good: .It lights up the whole instrument panel.I really never digged the electical guage unit but with this mod makes me look at it in a different way.The white guages really look great, thumbs up from my part here :good: .I wouldn't look at any other place :rocks:.

Thanks, Carl! I couldn't find any other logical place to mount them....if I'd put them on the top of the instrument panel, it would block the view of the volt meter and radio/cb meters....

If I mount anything at all on the lower right side fairing panel, it'll be a digital thermometer and a digital clock...

If mounted it would look digital awesome :smilie_happy:

Oil pressure sending unit can replace the stock one. It only trips an idiot light anyway.
It might not hurt to still have a functioning idiot light, but I'm guessing that'd require two sending units since the stock one is set to make contact at some pre-set value......if that, in fact, is the case, then like you mentioned slabghost, I can just switch out senders.. do NOT want to clutter things up with 2 senders.

I don't think two senders would hurt anything it would be adding a "T" and you would still have a warning functioning light.

I think having both the gauge and the light would be a good idea. You might loose oil pressure suddenly, and without the light you might not know it until it's too late. Having two senders might be a challenge to plumb, but worth the effort, imho. I plan on installing an oil pressure gauge, also, but mine will be a mechanical style, and will also incorporate the original idiot light. Instead of a vacuum gauge, tho, I'll be installing an amp/voltage gauge. :good:

I'm curious how the vacuum gauge acts running on one cylinder.

I installed one straight to vacuum and the needle bounces wildly.
After hooking it inline to a vacuum canister the readings are useable but still bounce.
I guess a "fish tank" air valve is in order.

I forgot to mention that mine is a mechanical oil pressure guage style installed

Vacuum guage could be tapped into the line for the vacuum advance, It would read overal vacuum a read pretty steady. Should have no effect on the vacuum advance function at all.

i would agree that hooking a vacuum gauge to one cyl will not work will. the best spot is the line to the advance unit. i built a dash unit, with a flat panel that runs from the edge of the windshield on the left to the edge on the right. this allowed me to install four smaller gauges that are easy to read,(up high), but do not interfer with your line of site to the road. the gauges are oil pressure, clock, temp,(with real numbers), and volt. i would have to wonder what the value of a vacuum gauge is beyond maximizing fuel mileage. also mounting them in the fairing prevents the mechanical oil line from moving as the handle bars a moved

Aside from helping get the best mileage from your machine the vacuum guage is a good indicator of the mechanical "health".

Would be great to see pic. of those guages :beg:  now the connection on the advance unit priceless :yahoo:

Isn't it the vacuum advance that has vacuum only as throttle is opened?
That also comes off one cylinder. I'll have to try it sometime.
