i still say the battery itself could be the culprit ...if the batter is shorting or plates touching when hot maybe ....were talking tolal shutdown ....the ignition switch could cause total loos of power ....when it dose this you sould check battery for power .....turn all switches off including kill switch and cross the two posts with jumper cables looking for spark if there is good spark its not the battery...then move elsewhere down the main power wires to seleniod or ignition switch ...something causeing this in the right there stuff ....theres few things that cause total shut down ....but must figure out if battery is good first

dont forget grounds either ....battery ground and there one up by the coils too on the bracket itself on most oldwings ...1000 for sure what ive been working lately .....that ground could kill lights and ignition and starter also i think ...there all tied there and get ground there ......... :headscratch:

Took the day off yesterday. Had to get away from it for the head to clear out. Well I drove 90 miles in the car to pick up 1980 coils.
Going to replace the coils for the 80 engine. going to replace the iginiton switch bottom with a new bottom.
I did find the ground that is associated with the coils.

If it starts after all this then We are going on a 150 mile ride on sat. With volt meter to see what happens if it shuts down.
Gotta get this figured out as it will be a long ride to South Dakota shutting down every 30-50 miles.

After replacing the coils betsie quit shutting down.
After putting in the c5 I quit worrying about it.

Sorry I did not put this on the thread at the time of getting her to run again.

I can relate. Funny how that can happen.

I late reading this thread, but had the same exact problem. Found wiring between frame and forks going open and that was not an easy fix, or easy to find.

The way I found it was by starting the bike, and began pulling on the wiring harness at different location until I finally found it. Opening up that harness locating the open wire was a real pain. I first tried continuity testing and they all checked good, once I located where the wire was going open I then used my VOM to locate what wire was the culprit.
