Organizing stuff is not my strong point. looking for ideas and pictures on how to organize and clean up my garage to regain needed work space. It's basically a one car garage with 4 bikes and a quad in it with wood and metal working tools. Going out for some shelving today to get started.
Any and all suggestions will be considered and appreciated. :good: :thanks:

Throw everything away except for tools and bike/parts and start over.

Yeah right, wish I could do that.

The only way I've figured to get a handle on it of any kind is to let go of any sentimental value the stuff has and pitch it if I have no definite plan to put it to use in the very near future.
Example is...I bought a new bath faucet kit which came with the new drain pieces. I have no plan to use the drain parts so out it goes.

After that is start separating everything I haven't used or had a use for in the last year.
Set that stuff aside for sale or trash.
It is hard to get rid of good stuff but it's the only way if there isn't room for it.
Of course as soon as I get rid of it I need it 2 days later.

For the rest of the stuff......floor to ceiling shelves. Get everything off the floor. Designate shelf areas to different categories like oil and car stuff here, Bike parts there, Household there.
If there isn't enough room for everything off the floor, time to get rid of more.

All sounds good in theory......I should talk. Should see my garage and yard.

Oh, hang stuff from the rafters and walls like shovels, rakes, weed wackers.
Surprising how much room that stuff takes when standing in the corner.

It took me 4 years to get this far...and i'm still working on it, it's really a mess now, with this 1500 i've got taken apart in it. I don't know how much back yard you got, maybe get a small metal out building and store some stuff in it too. I need one myself....Geees all the stuff i have gathered lately.

I bought another building to store stuff but it's down a snow covered hill at the moment. Great shop you have there.

V, I'm probably not the one to ask..... :hihihi:

If Gerry got rid of the piano in his garage, he'd have more room!!!!!!

The key to space is mobility. Put everyting on wheels so that you can move it off to the side when you don't need it and then move it to the center of the garage when you want to use it.

I hate tool boxes because I always end up digging through them for 5 minutes to find the tools that I need, so I just use peg board and hang everything on the walls, but till I am not working on a project, it seems all the tools are laying in a pile on the work bench and I end up digging through the pile looking for the tool that I need. It is a big visious cycle!

well once organized you call it ...i cant seem to do or find anything ... but it makes nice pics ....im like brian everything hangs on the wall ....or is laying on the ground

or is laying on the ground

That laying on the ground organization is great!..........(Until you have to cut the grass!!) :smilie_happy:
:smilie_happy: Or find it again! :thanks:

Get the wood working power tools moved elsewhere. I've seen lots of good tools near-ruined by sawdust that settled on them, harbored moisture, and caused severe corrosion. They can be stored there (after cleaning), but must be used elsewhere.

I've started putting screw hooks in the ceiling joists and using them to hang things out of the way. If a head-bump hazard, I hang bright colored microfiber rags from them. Garage still looks like a horder's lair.

I bought hooks and shelves. Now if I can just get a day off to do something maybe I can make some progress.

I haven't organized yet, but I have some hints to keep working till I do...

1.hang stuff up, if the workbench is covered, you can work on stuff hanging from the ceiling.

2. Pile stuff in front of the door to make bringing more stuff in difficult.

I keep telling myself I gotta clean out...then I go do something else...tee hee.

I already have the door blocked idea well covered. Just need to find time and space to get hooks in the ceiling.
