I found this on another forum first. Watch how he places the heat and gently forms the curve.

Took more heating time than I expected it would. I can see why hydraulic benders are more common.
What kind of pipe is that?
Just guessing but I think that is stainless steel pipe. Iron I'm pretty sure would be glowing hot to bend like that. It would also be more prone to kink I guess.

I wonder how many were ruined before he finally got it right. Now it appears he has it down to an art form.
Indeed! Hand forming metal for any purpose is akin to an art form to those who are proficient.

Cool! It looks like the pipe is full of something I am sure like sand.
You may be right but I see no evidence of a plug or cap and his bending pipe looks to be like an ID to OD adapter of maybe a meter length. It looks to me like it is entirely how the heat is applied that allows the bend. Cooler material to the inside of the curve and hottest to the outside.

+1 on stainless and unfilled
Very nice smart hands as Joe would say. :good:

That is very nice but I wonder about the discoloration. No problem if you are going to chrome the pipe, or paint it. If that one is like the others on the bench then my guess is that it is going to get painted. I would not want that on a bike the way it is. The pipe bender was a good invention.

Stainless won't blue like chromed steel will and should polish up just fine. However if it just stayed smoked or off color I'd use it. It'll fit like it was made for it. :hihihi:

At 12:24, he pulls his bending pipe off which appears to have been slipped over the end that has a plug of some sort.

Does noticed that myself, but not knowing, the saying goes. Better to be silent, & thought to be a fool. :headscratch: Than to open one's mouth & remove all doubt!!! :smilie_happy:
