I'm not experiencing any issue or problem with my motorcycle's engine but I never see anything on piston rings, can you still get them? Where are some locations? Thanks, I'm aways thinking ahead..
I had to ask the question because I read 4 different sites and the subject of rings hardly ever comes up.... I'm guessing guys would rather change the engine than replace the rings, must be a big hassel...I've never done it.. I wish I had an old engine I could learn on...I would love to take one apart just see what does what...that's gotta be fun..Oh, thank you for replies..dan filipi":1jn0v241 said:Rings are out there, saber cycle has them for $30 a piston.
Questionable quality though.
It's the main bearings and pistons that are getting hard to find.
Beav, I have the '81 engine sitting on the floor. Problem is, it costs $276 to ship it! I too am guilty of swapping engines rather splitting the case. I priced rings, bearings and seals and it came to over $480 not counting valves, springs or valve seals. I just found an '83 with 48K on it, cleaned, repainted, minor seals and gaskets and off we went! Less than $400 total (including $276 to ship the engine!).littlebeaver":33rfzprn said:I had to ask the question because I read 4 different sites and the subject of rings hardly ever comes up.... My '81 engine had over 169K, was beat to death, worn out springs, valves, knocks and it still ran strong!ajclockga":1wqpwhxr said:Good thing about the box engine,it wars alot less on the engine than a vtwin,or inline.Bikebandit has them listed for 64.45 a set.Part #572284 .That seems kinda high. That would be 260.00 for rings.Sounds to me like it would be cheaper to just find a low mileage engine.I've seen alot of these with well over 100,000 miles running strong. And alot sold as parts bikes with 40-60k.Usually with these it electronics, stators, and wiring issues that make alot of people park them.I dont think I've ever ran across a blown bottom end.Tranny, head gaskets, and stators is about I've ran across.
I don't think rings would be mayor problem when you redo any engine there is a lot of interchanges that could fit one way or another. Its sorta like ball bearings. You would still have to install the best quality if oems aren't available....since splitting cases wouldn't be fun a second time around.Unless we are speaking of joedrum  .By the way great avatar just seen it today.littlebeaver":l6ezv2s1 said:I'm not experiencing any issue or problem with my motorcycle's engine but I never see anything on piston rings, can you still get them? These crazy guy's running this site, one of these fools changed my Avatar one day and I think they got a big kick out of it, probably laugh at me everytime they see it now, I'm a great sport, I said leave it, it made my wife laugh and daughter so that's good enough for me, and it's funny alright...Better than anything I could have come up with,,, Warning...There are some crazy guy's around here...Oh and someone said it was the little golpher off of the movie Catty Shack.. So it's not fun splitting the cases, is that what your saying, nothings wrong with my engine I just like to learn stuff...I'm one of those hungry to learn stuff guys I guess, and I would like to be able to strip that engine down to bare bones and put it back together in my sleep..Is all.....carl62cycles":pwxioh7p said:I don't think rings would be mayor problem when you redo any engine there is a lot of interchanges that could fit one way or another. Its sorta like ball bearings. You would still have to install the best quality if oems aren't available....since splitting cases wouldn't be fun a second time around.Unless we are speaking of joedrum  .By the way great avatar just seen it today.littlebeaver":pwxioh7p said:I'm not experiencing any issue or problem with my motorcycle's engine but I never see anything on piston rings, can you still get them? You got me worng...it would be fun splitting the block :builder: ...but not twice for lets say bad rings or other sort of problem from the rebuild work afterwards.I guess that anyone would like to finish and enjoy it rather then going back at it for some problem that could arise afterwards.littlebeaver":3rjk6u8a said:These crazy guy's running this site, one of these fools changed my Avatar one day and I think they got a big kick out of it, probably laugh at me everytime they see it now, I'm a great sport, I said leave it, it made my wife laugh and daughter so that's good enough for me, and it's funny alright...Better than anything I could have come up with,,, Warning...There are some crazy guy's around here...Oh and someone said it was the little golpher off of the movie Catty Shack..
