I have been thinking about a new project bike and had an old Wing come up on my radar.
It's a 77 GL 1000 Standard.
Been sitting.
Will fire up on fresh gas supply and starting fluid but backfires thru exhaust and intake sporadically.
Owner inherited it, says he thinks backfire is from an aftermarket ignition system gone bad.
It has restorable paint (aqua blue).
It's so cheap, I could likely even double my money parting it out.

What say ye, oh wise ones???

If it's cheap enough I'd go for it.

Any pictures?

A few hundred bucks.

Ok, all thumbs up seems to be the consensus here. I agree too.
I talked with him and came to an agreement. It is located quite a distance from me so I went for a ride on my 1100 today. Tomorrow I will own it.
Be prepared for a barrage of GL 1000 specific questions and posts, LOL.

+1

Ok fellows,
I got the bike hauled home. Kind of overwhelmed, it needs a lot of work. But like all big jobs, a piece at a time will get it done if I stay at it.
I did break the rules and committed the sin of "briefly" firing it up, I had to hear it run..
I need to recommendations about best products for reviving the old beast.

I don't intend to create a museum piece, I'm not even into that.
I believe motorcycles are meant to be ridden, so it will be a rider with some obvious cosmetic wear but fully safe and functional.

Right off the bat I have to make some choices and purchases, and some must haves.

The bike: 1977 GL 1000 Standard, true 1 owner but recently passed to son in his will. 18000 miles,
but has sat up for years.

I'll have go thru all the mechanicals. ignition system, fuel system, controls and control cables, brakes, tires, lights, and many other things, yikes.......

Any thoughts on specific products or improvements would be appreciated.

Also, I don't want to break the bank and over spend so inexpensive idea's, vendors, and parts would be also appreciated.

ok ....ill give you my thoughts ....the early 1000s have some really strange wiring and devices ...namely the reserve lighting unit ...i have no clue how this thing works really to trouble shoot ...but trouble is huge this thing causes in the lighting system ...it needs to be bypassed ...not hard and cheap ... early or all 1000s have cv carbs and no excellerator pump ... this is just bad design ....rebuild kits range from ok priced to super exspensive gasket kits ... and huge campane to discount the cheaper rebuild kits as not good ... there right to some extent ...if you rebuild kit use it all as new parts dont actually fit 40 yr old used parts ...long story short you take stock carbs passed cleaning things clear and sealing up so things dont leak ...it really get exspensive ....there is single carb ..dual carb options out there too ... but nothing here is super cheap or easy like stock carbs ...my move first would be to clean carbs and try to get them to perform....pass that it a battle to keep money down and effort up to succeed....

ignition is not cheap at all points sale like gold ...wiring always degraded by now causes huge problems with its voltaged droping design after yrs of use....

to be quite honest replacing the ignition with c5 iggy is the cheapest way to defeat the problems of ignition ...nothing compares and nothing works as good ...buying used not made parts that sale like gold is not cheap and rarely fixes anything

so to get great bike to ride ... you cant spend just spend money and get ..takes your hands making good moves with what you can get for your hands to work with ...

sounds hard its not ....there this forum to help along the way ..we seem to good and get better as we go along with our member way of doing things ....

I just bought a Honda factory service manual.
First thing, I want to get some new timing belts and make sure timing is on the money.
Then I will fashion a temporary fuel cell so I can run it a few minutes to see what it runs like.
The fuel tank on it is bad, I'll have to get a decent used one on Ebay and clean it up nice.
With this done I should be able to make some kind of assessment of the carbs etc.
The son that inherited it got overwhelmed but did change the oil and filter, sparkplugs, and battery.
