Joe these stators are really quite reliable just underpowered, 30 years is a good innings for any component. The heat fatiguing occurs through excess load or power consumption. Once any extra lights etc were added we were making the charge circuit operate on max out put for extended periods of time which caused the high current/heat fatiguing of connectors. The resistance in the copper windings would not of changed over the years. I would have no problems using your old stator with new leads attached to the copper windings.

im diffinitly going to try and fix that stator ansimp ....just not on this bike because of time and fuds issue for the moment ...im not trashing it ...its a project of it own im going to do ...I have two other 1200 project bikes going on ....

Yeah ya know, 30 year old techology too.

Now that is an accomplishment!! :yahoo:

Hey Joe,

Nice work,

I replaced my stator, On my 83 GL1100, and Honda really did not want those stator bolts backing out while the engine was running.

I hope you remembered to Blue loc-tite the Stator bolts before going back in.

Poor wire connections cause resistance. Resistance causes heat. Heat destroys electrical components. Time, air and moisture corrodes connectors causing resistance. If your motorcycle is or was stored outside it will have corrosion issues in the electrics. Honda didn't expect us to keep these bikes around so long did they?

So Joe, just how sure are you that a 1000 stator would work in hooch??? I happen to have a pair of them sitting in my garage. I think I want to go with a new one, but you never know just how reliable those are, and I already know that on my 1200 the only thing I will be adding is a USB charging port so I really do not need a new heavy duty charging system.
