I have a 1984 Goldwing and I am looking to change out the seat because the foam is worn out. I have heard before that the foam on the 1987 Goldwing was greatly improved and have been thinking about finding one off of ebay as they are quite inexpensive.

Has anyone had experience?

I had read something similar about the 87 foam being better, but I could not find anything to support the claim. The seat on my 84 is good for about 600, but I'm good for 550. I know that because I did about 575 from Florida to Virginia and had about 25 miles of comfort left.

My 84 standard's seat's are both still in good shape, not yet baked out. :nea: The one on the 87 may be a little bigger, & softer, but the cover is splitting. :sensored: All have been replaced, & now they all have lived in my garage rafter area, for some time now. :hihihi:

My seat on my 84 aspy must be aweful, or my butt is aweful. You guys are claiming 300-700 miles a day! I rode to Vincennes on last week, only about 180 miles from home, and it was not known for the comfy seat thats for sure. My seat has been recovered by my dad when he had it. There is no pleating on the seat, just straight vinyl and I find it to be incredibly uncomfortable. So much so that I am contemplating purchasing a Harley again. I am torn between purchasing a new cover or a new seat or a new bike.

I think the issue is when it was recovered there is not enough material where the seat meets the lumbar part of the seat. I think this results in that part of the seat feeling more like a hammock and less like a comfy spot for your back. I always feel like I am sliding forward on the seat or "down hill". I have a bike built to go across the country but the seat makes it uncomfortable to go across town.

I was looking at this cover

I have a hard time going fill up to fill up non stop with my seat and wearing jeans, especially when it's hot and I get sweaty legs.
I've read sheep skin covers help a lot for padding the butt from the vinyl seat.

For my 1k+ mile ride in one day ( Newcastle Wy to Winnemucca Nv) on the Rats Nest I took someone's advice and used a memory foam patio chair pillow on my stock seat and it worked great even though it looked pretty daggy.

A lot of comfort in the seat can be found in repositioning the handle bars. As well as the seat and pegs. Even a custom made seat will be a lot cheaper than a new bike.

Agreed! I use setback handlebar risers on my '82 and have used a sheepskin too! It took about 5,000 miles for my seat to break in, but I can ride for at least 600 miles a day minimum on the highway at speed. Only breaks needed were gas and pee! My backrest provides a tremendous amount of lumbar support and it makes all the difference in the world.
