+1 Coaxial cable is what I used to shield the preamp outputs on the organ. These were large cases with 5-pin DIN plugs for the outputs, that were grounded to the case, and a single wire carried the audio signal from the circuit board to the DIN plug. I removed the single wire, replacing it with a piece of coax, and grounded the coax shield to the case. The organ factory told me they'd never had any issues with interference before, but because of the location (in El Paso, Texas) being so close to the transmitter of the radio station, and the fact that there is no limit to Mexican transmitter power output, we had the problem.

Are you running non-resistor plugs or caps on your bike? You might try lining the trunk interior with foil and grounding it to the frame as a shield. The only problem with that is unless you're using an external antenna, it could also block the radio station signals...

I believe they are resistor plugs, but Dyna wires. I am not sure, but I do not think there is any resistor in these wires. They are 7mm solid core wires.

If the wires say resistor and the plugs are NGK resistor plugs, would there still need to a resistor cap rather than car type boots on these wires?

I don't know of any reason to have more than one resistor inline.
And even at that, I gather that's only for reducing radio interference.

Boy do I feel stupid......

NGK D8EA plugs.........non-resistor

8MM Grey Dyna Wires.......solid copper core - no suppression!

No NGK resistor caps.........

And I wonder why the radio shows interference noise???? :nea:

Raises a new question. I have an '81 set of coils in there with no ballast resistor with the '83 ignition advance, no tar leaking from my CDI units and the bike runs like a clock. If I go adding resistor wires and plugs, am I changing the mix enough that I could fry my CDI units?

You should be fine. Adding resistance lowers current flow, though minimally in a spark plug circuit, so the coils and ignitors should actually run very slightly cooler. Much easier than shielding everything!

Resistor caps or plugs alone may be enough. Speaker clamps may fit the frame better if there's any space.

I don't know but the interference from sold core wires alone was unacceptable.

~O~

I'm due for new plugs anyway. These plugs have over 19K miles on them. So I will at least get resistor plugs to start off. I do have my old '81 wires and resistor caps. Maybe I should just pop them on for now to test.

I was also considering Iridium plugs at one point. I wonder if now is good time to try them? I think I will start a new thread for opinions!

I would try the cheapest resistor plugs first then swap the ignition over.
At least this way we all learn what causes the radio noise and what can be done about it.

Way back when I replaced the 7mm stock wires with 7mm copper core I couldn't find 7 mm resistor type. Maybe more choices now?

Purchased the resistor plugs, installed and started up..........ignition noise! :cheeky:
Swapped the wires with old OEM wires with resistor caps......ignition noise! :cheeky:

Frustrating since the radio did not have ignition noise when installed in the Vetter Cycle Sound unit with the Infinity speakers!

The only difference is that instead of using the speaker wires direct to the speakers like before, I am using the RCA speaker outputs in the back of the radio to the RCA inputs on the amp just like the Sony wiring diagram shows. These RCA outputs are specifically for adding an amp with 4 speakers and a separate subwoofer. (I tried the subwoofer on the bike but everytime it hit big bass notes the bike would jump up and down :smilie_happy: )

That is the only difference and maybe that is the difference! So far, I am not happy with the setup. But, to be honest, the speakers do not have ignition noise if I only plug an iPod into the AUX wire on the new amp. It did come with a volume control knob. The sound is clear, but if I put the iPod volume up all the way and amp volume up fairly high (to be equal to the volume level I used to have) the speakers start distorting.

Plus, I have all kinds of funtionality with my Sony radio that I do not want to lose to just use an iPod. (Plus I just got that real cool waterproof remote for the radio!!)

So.......I do not want to damage the amp and speakers in case I decide to send them back. But......I really like the look of the speakers and it was really only speakers I was looking for. So, I pulled the speaker wires carefully out of the 6 pin connector and wrapped the radio speaker output wires around the pins to just try the speakers alone.

 YEAH MAN!! IT WORKED!!

The speakers are rated the same as the Infinity speakers. The radio sounds great again......and......NO IGNITION NOISE!!!

So now I have to decide what I want to do about the ignition wires.

BTW, I was wrong about the Dyna wires being copper. I just looked up the Grey Dyna 8MM wires in my receipts and assumed they were copper.

After getting the tank off and pulling a wire, I realize it says "8MM High Temperature with Conductive Silicone Core and Silicone Jacket". Probably best to put these back on?

Can you hook the amp to the speaker outputs of the head unit?
I am not sure how. The only input to the amp is the RCA jacks and the AUX jack.

I think shielded rca cables are available at stereo stores.

edit- Do you have unused connections open on the radio? That may be part of the noise input.

Well, there are 3 more RCA jacks not in use since I only have the front speakers and no back speakers or subwoofer.

+1 on good quality shielded RCAs
