you know these tacks are not that acturate ....ithink its easy for the tacks to be off some and the speedos too .....best i can figure from info ive look up is

1000s 4100-4200 rpm at 70

80-81 5000 at 70mph

82 4000 at 70mph

83 3600-3700 at 70mph

My bike doesn't feel comfortable above 55 mph, the gearing is just way too low. That got me to thinking, the early 80's were all about emissions and gas shortages. I think the 82 was castrated. All I know is just past 55 my girl starts to feel very light and the tires feel skinny. IDK, maybe I've got too much play in my tripletree and swingarm.

Mine is an '82 with an '83 engine, but even when I had the '81 engine (5000 RPM at 70 MPH) it felt like it just wanted to stay up there! Never felt her get light on her feet!

:hi: I'm with you Gary, I felt I could go all day at 70 ( at least that is what the speedo read) on the Navada highways out of Reno between Sparks and Lovelock...My only problem was my A/C it just did not cool enough to compensate for the 100 degree temp :heat: :heat: :smilie_happy: Bob

Yes it does Joe, I know the bearings in the forks need to be changed out. Do you think that is causing the uncomfortable feeling at 55+? I don't remember my 1000 feeling like this and it had only a fraction of the miles the 82 has.

Read my mind Dan. Does the fairing need to come off to replace the bearings in the head(whatchamacallit)?

~O~

I haven't done it and not looking forward to it on mine, but I believe so.

yeah like dan says get the bike on the centerstand and look for play....front and back ....my 82 is real nimble feeling and i like that .....on the lite side compared to the 83 ......

you can use a chalk line and pop a line on the payment a good long one and roll the bike down the line and see how it tracks compared to the strait line ....that would be the first thing i would want to know

here where i live its hard to find a place to do this ....but iwould think it would be easy where you live ~O~

:hi: One problem I just encountered with my 80's steering, it felt funny and seamed to be stiff which made for a lot of stearing adjustments just to go strieght :head bang: ......Put it up on center stand to check as I thought I might have a bearing problem :crying: ... after carefully checking I found that steering lock tab was bent and the weld was cracked......I think someone tried to break the tab off with a pry bar in order to steel the bike :sensored: :sensored: :sensored:   ....It was parked in the parking garage at Harrah's in Reno for two days when the wife and I spent a couple of days there during HOT AUGUST NIGHTS... any way I pulled the faring and found the mechanisum was draging on the bent tab.... I bent it back into place and welded it where it belongs.......So watch parked bikes as thief's know how to get past the steering lock. just a long pry bar or screwdirver will bend the tab...Bob
