Dial up and it's providers have become predatory entities. Taking complete advantage of situations where customers that have no access to a modern Internet connection. Luckily their days are numbered. :|

Btw, it costs the provider absolutely nothing when a consumer is idle.

This is really messed up for him.

The cheapest provider is $60 a month with a 10 GB limit, then up to $75 month for 15 GB.
He figures he'd be up to around $200 month for 'unlimited' if they even offer it.

He needs to get a satellite connection.
Same limited deal.

Sucks, my internet went up 5 bucks this month, I guess I have to help pay for those new customers with package deal.
Need to find an alternative to verizon , maybe going cell but would rather have a hard line.
I wonder how much risk there is in an occasional ebay purchase or to monitor my checking account over the air, seems air is my only option.
Last I looked the only secure internet by air was as expensive as my DSL.

When I was still on dialing up, I would get booted if it sat "idle" for more than aboot ten minutes or so. As has been mentioned, it may take that long sometimes just to load a friggin page. However, if the thing is up/d-loading, it is not considered idling. Idling is when ya gotta go pee, or out to the garage to look at something, or....maybe just READ a page, such as going thru a thread on the forums. It really does suck. Not all areas have any high-speed options, and if they do, it can cost an arm & a leg. When I got mine a year ago, bundled w/TV & phone service, it was about $10 more a month than what we were paying for all of it separately anyway. Since our 1 year contract expired, they are raising it WAAAAAY far above what we were paying. Now Mama is thinking we should go with someone else for all of it. It's just a circle jerk....they pull ya in with low prices, then stick it in at the end of the contract.
Hope he gets something going that he can live with. :beg:

I have Verizon DSL and it has been my experience that I have to beat them up every other year to keep my level of service and not accept a raise in the monthly fee. It takes a bit, but they always "Find" a way to make it work for the same amount of money (and sometimes less) per month.

I won't pay much for Internet access. I WILL NOT pay for TV (antenna in the attic) and I do have a landline phone hardwired to the wall! :cheeky:

Sorry to here about his troubles... when I was out here 16 years ago we had cable.. left in 2001.. and when I came back in 2008 the cable provider was gone.. looked into Hughes net, broadband, blue sky and direct.. all too much.. had the broadband guy come out to try and install.. (I am in the middle between 3 towers and about 3 miles from the furthest one).. and he could see the antennas but could not get a usable signal... so I use my cell phone and the local Mickey d's.. on phone right now.. and I pay for unlimited tethering also..yeah $$ but I have 5 phones on plan sand only this one unlimited..

I've got the Verizon 3g Mi-Fi satellite hook up with a 10 Gig data package, cost me 80.00 a month, works great. They have to 4g LTE out now that's suppose to be faster but it's not in all areas. The good part is I can pick up this little plastic box about the size of a credit card and 1/4 in. thick and carry it with my laptop and have internet most anywhere I go.

No,the old style dial up,you know when you get the pings when the modem is dialing

That is unreal, I thought you guys wouldn't still have dial up anywhere. I complain about my crappy internet but don't even think I have a dial up modem any more, I am surprised that V is able to post anything!
