I have an 81 GL1100 and just installed a solex 34. I'm not sure the wiring is connected right. The auto choke I'm not sure is engaging. Also do both vacuum lines need to be capped?

e choke is not that important right now ... the vacume is another ? ..do you have stock ignition 1000 or 1100 vacume advance ignition ..or what ..plays into this ?

oh welcome to classic

Hook up one vacuum line at back of carb...plug the rest......and hook up electric choke, so it comes on when key is turned on. Run an auxillary ground to carb.

I have vacuum line plugged and the other connected to vacuum advance. But choke isn't working. Can someone tell me specifically where to connect the positive and ground leads on the bike. I don't think mine are placed right

Hook up the vacuum to what? I assume the vacuum advance on the ignition housing. What is the purpose of the auxiliary ground?

The way mine was as I bought it: a wire went from the left side of the carb to the right side of the carb. Then a wire went from this to the positive accessory terminal and a wire from the negative accessory terminal to the carb body. Photos coming when I find them!

Electric chokes benefit with a seperate ground rather than earthing through the manifold, throttle cable or water pipes. I would use a relay through ignition switch or seperate choke circuit remembering that an electric choke requires power to heat it up and turn the choke off so it needs to run all the time.

This is how mine came out of the box from the previous owner:

This end was connected to the positive terminal of the accessory slot on the fuse panel.

This is the ground wire from the accessory terminal to the body of the carb.

One hot goes to choke, other hot goes to solenoid on other side, ground goes to carb body. This is where to hook vacuum line on 81.

 i dont know the solex that well so im staying out of it mostly ... personally on my bike ...choke was last thing i needed to worry about ... following closely to learn more on solex

My understanding is the electric choke needs to be hooked up and working to adjust 34-3 carb. It worked for me. I am attaching directions for carb adjustment. Only change from these directions for my GL1100 is the magic idle rpm is 1050.
