joe you better look into this a little more and realy make sure its not getting hot ....it could be that 7 volt guage regulator thing that when bad sends 12 volts to the guages instead making them peg the neddle...the gas guage would register high too ....but dont let this thing run hot .....if it is first thing get rid of the thermostat and ride it around and see if it runs cooler ....you need to get a handle on this ......

I read this in another thread, and now wonder if this "7 volt gauge regulator thing" is the cause. I'll look down and they(gas/temp) are pegged, then they reset. Might do it once per ride about 20% of outings. Can ya tell me where this is located and maybe a pic?

~O~ it probably is ...im not sure where its at on the 1100....and if i did i certanly couldnt post a pic on it ....but im going to get a handle on this pic posting thing ive had enough of not being able to do it....and my daughters are not helping me on purpose so im going to show them that helping someone is not a burden but a pleasure in life ......

I had to replace mine. You should do it sooner rather than later because you can fry the electrics in your gauges. It is located underneath the dash where the neutral, oil, high beam and turn signal lights are. You have to take it apart to get to it. I bought mine off ebay.

Well, apparently, they could be anywhere! :Awe:
I'm sure mine was not under the oil/neut/beam cluster, but it has been a couple of years since I messed with it. I'm thinking mine was behind the speedo/tach-fuel/temp cluster, and I had to remove the back off of the cluster to get to it.
O-man, check out this other thread for a schematic to test it...once you do find it!

It's in the gauge cluster under neath..have to remove it to get at it..not to hard but a tight fit for wrenches

Well the gauge cluster/speedo and tach assembly had to come off the parts bike anyway so here's a few pics what it takes to get at the voltage reducer;

Watch these 2 little dowel spacers don't sneak out and get lost somewhere in the grass:

There's the little bugger!

Easy job on a non faired bike but looking at mine with the fairing it's obvious you'll have to pull the entire cluster off the bike to replace the reducer.
Fairly simple.
Unscrew the speedo and tach cables,
remove the 2 10 MM hex nuts,
Pull the cluster upward,
Unplug the harness.

Now the whole thing will lift up and out so the plastic (earlier) can be easily removed and replace the regulator.

Have fun ~O~

Yeah!!! Now I remember! :Doh2:
I was actually able to get to mine without loosening the cluster. Just removed the plastic cover(btw...those are some fairly loooong bolts!), and I could work on it from there. Prolly would be easier if the speedo/tach was loose, I'm sure. I'll try that next time! :rtfm:

Well, I was kind of right. When I changed my 7 volt regulator, I also switched the flasher indicators to LED in the dash so I was thinking about that. But, it was on the other side of the dash.
