83 Interstate, speeometer quit. A couple months ago I could hear some chatter and noticed irratic operation going on in the speedometer. I was thinking I need to clean and lube the cable. Never got to it, though. Recently the thing just silently stopped working while going down the freeway. So....I jump the gun and order a new cable before checking things out. New cable arrives in OEM package. So I go out to the bike and start removing the old cable. I took it loose at the wheel first, and pulled the cable from the housing. Hmmm, it's all in one piece. Nothing wrong with it. I then shove it back into the housing and give it a few twists with my fingers and see the speedo needle jump to 10 mph consistantly. The tire was still on the ground, so I couldn't spin that and check the drive. So, hopefully wishing, I cleaned and lubed the cable and housing and put it all back together and give that a try. Still no speedo operation, but not surprised either. I plan on removing the front axle today to access to gear drive. If it's locked up, or somehow destroyed, my question is, will the drive from my 82 Standard fit and work correctly on the 83 Interstate? Or am I doomed to another ebay gamble? Anyone have any experience to share on this subject?

It took me 4 tries to get the cable right on my 81 speedo. If it doesn't stay up in the speedometer it won't drive it. Double check your drive unit. Try turning it with the cable. Don't force it. Then lift the front and turn the wheel to see if the drive turns. If memory serves I closed the blades a little on the cable, seated the cable in the speedo then put it on the drive to get it working. Good luck.

OOPS! Forgot to mention a very important detail. Yesturday coming home from work I disconnected the cable from the speedo head and observed while driving home. The cable doesn't turn at the top end. Not even while pushing down pressure to make sure it was seated. And I couldn't turn it by hand from the top side either. I really think something is wrong at the wheel end.

Looks like the drive gear busted. Being plastic, is this part not supposed to be lubed? Do you suppose the grease is the cause?

I can still turn the spade that drives the cable. Is just the gear still available?

And finally, back to my original question, Does anybody know if the one from my 82 Standard will work untill I can get some more shopping money?

Cheapcycleparts lists 2 different part #'s, so they are probably not interchangable.

83I, Box Set- Speedo Drive 44800-MBO-013...$66 & change.

82S, Box Set- Speedo Drive 44800-425-013...$72 & change.

Plus shipping.

Well its good the parts are available at least albeit pricey.

A different part number does t necessarily mean it isn't the same part, Honda might have change the part number in 83.
The ratio might be different though.
I'd pull off the 82 and compare it for that much $.

Nope. Not gonna do it. I just don't have the heart to pick the 82 apart anymore. That's enough of that. She's too good a bike to be parting out this way. I've decided to learn to do without a speedo untill something comes up. It's gonna be a good month or so before I have the money to deal with it. New is more than I'd like to spend for that, but maybe by then something will turn up on ebay.

Thanks for all your effort, ~O~.
Unfortunately, While I was get'n her all cleaned up I realized it won't work.

This is the one you sent.

This is what I need.
