I'm having a weird, (to me), problem. A couple months ago I put on a brand new starter. Now it won't spin but I'm only getting 6 volts from the relay. The battery checked good and it's putting out over 12 volts to the relay, but when the relay engages, I only get 6 volts. I thought it was the relay so I put a new one on but the new one does the same as the old one.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks alot!!

Yes, I get a good solid click when the relay engages. After close investigation, I'm thinking the starter I bought is the problem. When I disconnect the starter cable, I get a full voltage on the cable but when I hook it up the voltage drops.

It's looking like my new starter is toasted. I'm getting a dead short from the hot terminal to the body. When I hooked it up to a separate 12volt source it turned but VERY slowly. Uggh! $85 down the frickin' drain.

Thanks for the help. As a side note, you may want to stay away from a place called DB Electrical on eBay. 14 day return policy and the starter died in less than 30. I've got a couple old starters laying around, maybe I can piece a good one together! :beg:

wow. Sorry man, I know that's got to be frustrating. Might check where the hot lead goes thru the case on the inside and see if the internal lead was twisted or broken and is touching case. I've done that before. Good luck.

Thanks Mike, good idea, that bolt has some give to it anyway. Maybe I'll get lucky. I guess I have nothing to lose at this point by tearing the thing apart. :) It's either that or start breaking stuff with a hammer!

At work, it's not a hammer. It's a fine adjustment tool.

Also known as mechanical disposition adjuster.

talk to them before you do that - I bet they honour the repair!!

I emailed the company and they gave me the info to return the starter. I'm sending it off in the morning so we'll see if they carry through. If they do, I'll take back what I said earlier about them. :)
