I sure don't mean to derail This Thread, but I'd love to know how you did that!

Well first off, because we had some expensive circumstances, our insurance was VERY high last year. My wife had 2 at fault accidents still on her record, my son was a new rider.

Insurance for our 3 bikes was $3,300 for the year. 2 bikes full coverage, one bike liability only. Wife was paying $270 a month on her own policy.....$3,240 a year

My son got a new Accord that needed to be added and the bikes coming up for renewal in February, my son went on Geico site and found you can easily change the choices for each vehicle.....even the "primary" rider or driver. Long story short, I am primary on the 2 newer bikes, Brent is primary on the Oldwing. I am primary on the Suburban and the Accord. I have no tickets or accidents in forever.

Bikes:
Was- $3,300
Now- $1,296
Saving- $2,004

Cars:
Was- $3,240
Now- $1,728
Saving- $1,512

Total savings- $3,516!

Wow! Thanks Dan. I'll check my insurance settings. I'm also paying for my youngest son (23) and his rates are danged high.

I'm also going to alert Geico that you recently had a motorcycle accident.

Not for a while... Baby it's cold outside! Now I am working on a motor in my warm, heated basement.

Yeah, we're having a cold snap too. Only got up to 72F today.

It's time to get busy... putting the C5 on. After talking to Paul and getting all the parts and tools that I needed, I had to drill out the cam shaft. I didn't realize it until I talked to Paul. I thought I would be drilling the hole from scratch, but he mentioned that there is already basically a pilot hole in the end of the cam.

All I needed to do was make the hole deeper, so a 5mm drill bit was needed. In addition, I needed a M6x1.0 tap, so off to the store I go...

I just needed to extend the hole about 1/4"

Tap the hole and then mount it... one minor problem. Paul no longer sells a kit for the 1200, so he sent me two oversized aluminum spacers and I needed to make my own. Not bad for a starting point.

A little filing and some sanding and I soon had the wheel centered. Once that was done, I was able to put on the finishing touches!

Next up, mounting the coils, but it appears winter is being relentless, so I may need to do some more work in my basement. Perhaps the new carb needs to have some jets changed.

Not sure. I read it on his website that it was because of lack of sales, but he still has pieces to part things together like he did for me. Remember though that I used my 1100 ignition system.

Let me rephrase that... he no longer sells a complete kit.

"We discontinued the GL1200 due to lack of sales. If you wish to use our ignition a simple backing plate and cover would need to be manufactured. Our ignition can be mounted on the rear left cylinder head."

So, if you want something for a 1200, either buy the parts now while he still has them, increase the demand so he starts making them again, or make your own mounting plate.

Thanks. I wonder why the 1200s aren't selling? Maybe the electronics is not failing? I figured that was the backup plan if it went down on mine. :ahem:

Many simply can't see the value of the C5 ignition over the stock. A pretty paint job costs as much or more but is seen rather than felt. And yes the stock ignitions just don't fail much.

Mike, you can still get the ignition and the coil packs. The parts that you may not be able to get anymore is the mounting plate and cover. I paid $120 for those and a few extra items. I guess I may be one of the converts. I had the problems with my 1100 ignition so I spent the money for the C5 back then. Now I know what it is capable of so I am sticking with it even though my stock ignition doesn't have a problem. I can always use that on my 84 if I need it.

Yah it completely makes no sense that best aftermarket product ever made for an oldwing ...just didn’t sell good enough....there was a smear campaign done to it to discredit it ...but here on this forum all it’s pluses we’re pushed forward ...it is the single best thing that can be done to a oldwing motor ...I will never forget hosting the c5 meet and greet where the hooch bike was fitted with the c5 and custom programed by Paul ...hooch was still trying stock carbs at the time ..but soon after the clone Weber was put on and man did the two things together eventually create one of the baddest oldwings on the planet .....no other oldwing on the planet has my timing advances Paul and the classic gang put together at the meet ....hooch is diffinitly classic forum modded oldwing ..several yrs in the making ...and the c5 is the customized backbone of the bike...

It looks like I am starting to make some progress. Most of the holes are filled and parts are being bolted in. Theses two things better get comfortable together...

that coil pack was a pain in the ass getting in there. I think I remember Paul commenting about that a few years ago, but I did pay any attention to it until this past weekend.

My wife is in Texas so I have the house, and my time, to myself. That gave me the chance to get the ignition hooked up electrically, plug wires on, the carb installed and everything hooked up. With any luck, I may be able to fire it up on Monday.
