My bride and I are leaving PA on the 24th of sept. super slab west to Ohio, then into MI as far as Flint to meet up with an old Army buddy, then around the thumb and on up to the youpee and into WI, then across and down into MN, and super slab to Mt. Rushmore....we got new quality raingear and modular helmets, new sheepskin seat cover, any suggestions for what to take toolwise, or convenience wise? we are not pulling a trailer so minimalism is a plus, we plan to stay at motels mostly but I was Thinking about bringing the pop up tent....ideas?

Could go nuts preparing and stuffing the bags with spare parts and tools.
I would bring the tent just in case, if you do have room for it.
Other than that, basic tools and a phone.

How about one of those compact flat repair kits? I was thinking maybe a hose extension for my on board air compressor to air up a flat? will that work ya' think?

If you are thinking of a plug kit I think it's a great idea. The flat repair in a can takes up a lot more room and then you typically have to plug it anyway once you get into a town. You could hit some cold weather at the end of Sept., especially at night in a tent, but it would be a great time to ride the Black Hills. Now I'm envious.

so where is your first stop for fuel going to be in michigan? somewhere in monroe? i like the pilot truck stop at exit 18 but there is a pilot truck stop at exit 15 also and there are more resturants there if you are hungry. maybe i could meet you down there and ride up to flint with you, i need to go back to rocky's in burton and this https://www.bikerplaza.com/event-Bikes-O ... ricks.html will be taking place that weekend and i'm going there too

Forget the thumb.if you have time run up MIs west coast (Lake Michigan side rather than Huron side) 23 up huron is OK,but M22 and M119 up lake michigan are a pair of the most awsome rides in the country.

Oh yeah,and bring a 10mm wrench. :good:

Update...@ detdrbuzzard, Honestly forgot to put your number in my phone, We attended "the Bricks" on sunday and I'm pretty sure we were checking out your bike! We really enjoyed the police skills competition, The Canadians were indescribably precise during the two up! Okay, after super-slabbing 568 miles from home to Flint, we mutually agreed that 650 plus miles per day to meet our time line was going to be un-enjoyable and pretty much unsustainable with my back and the brides.....ummmm monthly. So, we decided to just scale it back and hang out in Michigan for a few days......WOW! The drivers are courteous and polite, even in Detroit! All the people we met were friendly to the point of being, I don't know, I'm just not used to that sort of kindness and courtesy and empathy! The Bikes on the Bricks is something special, it's not your usual v-twin rally, there was representations of all aspects of two wheel genius. Along with all sorts of stands for food and accessories.More on the trip from north of Flint Later...
