OK, first off, this is not my bike, but a buddy of mine has helped me so much with mine, I am trying to figure out what's wrong with his. It's a 1982 Goldwing 1100, I think pretty much all stock. It sat for a while but it fired up relatively easily today, but what happens is, once it gets warmed up and ready to go, if you shut it off, it won't start again. It acts like the battery doesn't have enough juice to turn the thing over, the battery is fine though. The other thing is that when this happens the starter itself gets very hot. I think way hotter than it should be. Let the thing cool down and it fires right up again, that is until it's in the normal temp range then no starting again. Anyone have a clue on this? Thanks in advance!

More than likely the starter motor is polling which is caused by worn bushes/bearings

Forgot to mention it is a new starter. The end part that goes into the little gear didn't fit right so my friend took that off the old starter but this is essentially a new starter.

Not what you would expect with a new starter!

Starter could be getting hot from increased mechanical load causing it to draw more current. You could check for the hydraulicing effect by turning the motor over mechanically with the crank bolt and wrench.
