I have a stupid question..I belong to another forum where people give likes to posts. I don't know what they are or what to do with them but they keep coming and I don't know if I am supposed to reciprocate or what.
I have never given a "LIKE" and don't see the need to or what purpose they serve.
I know I have heard this term in regards to something called facebook or maybe it was a dating site, I cant remember.
I am too embarrassed to ask there so I decided to ask here.
What do you think the purpose of these LIKES are?
Thanks.

As I understand it as it relates to Facebook is if you 'like' a post then it brings it up in search engine rankings.
I could be wrong on this. I visit Facebook rarely.

For 'likes' on a forum it may do the same thing but that depends how their software is set up.
Some 'likes' are designed to give the readers an opportunity to 'rate' the post in helpfulness.
I considered one a few years ago. It was frowned on by the members, I think mostly because it said 'karma' instead of 'like'.
There is another I've looked at but I don't really see the point since everyone here is usually pretty helpful in one way or another.

I agree, some forums are very touchy about how a +1 like we do here takes up server space. I've belonged to forums where the admin would call a +1 spam.
Mostly that would be because he doesn't understand how a database works.
Posts, even very long posts are a minuscule part of what takes up server space.
Images take up server space.
attachments= 5+ GB
gallery= 7+ GB
In relation, the database is under 300 mb lol.

The forum was saving the attachments and gallery images as full size uploaded.
Some were as much as 5 mb. A recent mod I did resizes them to a very small fraction of that which also makes them load faster as well as save on data transfer when browsing the forum on a smart phone.

Imo,its akin to me posting,i love you dan,then lets say joedrum agrees with me.he can like the post rather than replying

I got more "likes" on Facebook when I posted a pic of the '82 Wing than any other post I've done there. Other than knowing most of my friends and family appreciated the pic, I saw no other effects on my status. I believe if you don't occasionally "like" someone's posts, they stop showing up in your pages, or timeline, or whatever they call it now.

I "like" our way much better! Thanks, Dan, for keeping it unique here! :good: :eek:k:

the forum I was specifically referring to was a gamer forum run by teenagers and I always suspected they were full of it, looking for any reason to complain and over moderate.

Well thanks guys, seem to clear up some things, I did put a "like" on a good post over there just to see if it means anything, I seem to be getting likes for just short comments and it baffled me as to why, I said nothing groundbreaking or insightful.
Seems more confusing and a waste of time.

I haven't seen a "like" button on forums, but on Facebook it is used for many things (like it or not :hihihi: ).

The "like" on FB is clicked to either agree with a persons post, like someones post (which would think is obvious), show that you have read their post but don't either agree or disagree and sometimes for support of someone needing help (even though hitting "like" seems like a silly way to communicate you agree with someone while they are going through a tough thing in their life).

The +1 works great!
