so, it wasn't until a few weeks ago i started to notice a sound, I'm not sure if it has always been there, but my best discription i can give, which usually it happens around 3rd gear and 3600 to 3800 RPM's, is it reminds me of...you know how kids use to put playing cards into their spokes and it gave it that soft clicking sound? thats what it sounds like to me.

now it only happens when the throttle is going, and it has happend other times, and there are only two things i can possibly think of at this time....but knowing me, im being WAY paranoid.

1. possible timing chains?
2. when we adjusted my carbs, we backed it off to much.

the sound could have been there from the begining and i might have been to excited to be on a new (to me) sled to notice it. then again, this is a salvaged bike. and i have no idea what was previously done to it.

i have changed the oil a few times, flushed the radiator, so it shouldnt be anything to do with those....

help me out guys, am i just being paranoid?

try to record the sound and post it.Light sound of cards clicking may just be the valves tapping a little which is a good thing.

You say it is just in 3rd gear so I would rule out a mechanical sound unless it is associated with 3rd gear ,timing belts should slap in any gear, could it be something flapping in the wind? Maybe something slapping the frame when you reach a certain speed?

If it is only in 3rd at those revs then it is more than likely wear in the gear/box..

It happens most in 3rd gear around 2600 - 2800 RPM's, but it has come up at other times as well.

The sound seem to be comeing from the front left side mostly, i have heard it come from the front right a few times, but almost always on the left.

wouldnt it do it continuously if it were the timing belts?

also, an other note, on my 1100 mile round trip i took, about 400 miles away from home or so, going up a 10 mile windy hill going 65mph, my engine started to knock a little. it only did it for a few seconds, and i havent heard it since, but im guessing i just road the bike to hard.

Yes belts I'd expect all or most of the time at that same rpm.

That knock could have been a pre-ignition knock. Uphill at that speed in high gear with a head wind the engine is working hard.

hum....my buddy who usually works on my bikes with me, that was his first thought. though since he cant hear it from his bike when we went on a short ride, he couldnt fully tell.

Still need to hear this somehow. Too much varied. Regardless of the cause I really doubt it's much concern.

dont really have anything to record the sound with other then my phone, and even then, its hard to hear over the engine, its very quiet. i can only hear it usually when i turn my head towards the left side of the engine.

look under the bike and see if there is any debris caught somewhere. Might just be something flapping in the wind.

i clean the under carage when ever i clean the bike....it comes from the motor. like i said, it happens only when i have the throttle going.

I've heard it too but not very often.
If I remember it would come on around that rpm.

and remind me what is the "preignition" and is it a problem that i need to worry about? if so, how do i fix it?
