I've never understood the "cover the plate" thing in pictures posted on the web. What kind of scams specifically are folks worried about. Can a bike be legally stolen from it's owner with just a plate number, then what prevents this from happening everyday as the same number is displayed when we ride? Can someone claim to be a victim of some kind of accident or hit and run with just a plate number? Can someone take that plate number and reverse check it through DMV and steal ones identity, or find your address and kill you in your sleep one night? That number is displayed every mother lovin time we ride.

What?

I've just always wondered about this and Tony had blotted out half the number on his new plate so I thought I'd simply ask. I just don't believe all the bull**** answers I found online. Here's a couple:

More exposure online...wrong, let's say your plate is seen by a thousand people online(doubtful), many hundreds of others see your plate everyday. Do folks really believe 4 Billion web users see everything they put on the web?

I have a car that looks like yours so I make a fake plate that I use so if I'm in an accident or rob a bank it's on you...really? Then what stops this same person from getting your plate number while you are at the mall where he is sure to find a car just like his?

All you need is a plate number to get your address...wtf? The cops can do this, but thieves can't, thieves do have spotters who are constantly on the look out for desirable vehicles but there is NOTHING you can do to stop them if they really want your vehicle.

So tell me...have you EVER heard of any of these things or anything even like this happening in real life?

Better safe than sorry?

Who knows Randy if it is a necessary precaution. At the moment here in Oz they are showing footage of gangs stealing mail and using the information to create stolen ids. I shouldn't use the same id name on as many websites as I do but I like the idea of people knowing that it is the same poster as from another site.

We also have a heap of drive offs at fuel stations and with a decent printer you could make a false plate instead of stealing them as many do. We can actually fill our vehicles still and then pay for the fuel at most stations after filling.

The only reason I can think of is to conceal identity so let's say I get Tony's plate number then trace it somehow to his residence. This is probably same reason they blot it out on T.V.

Take that one step further...

Now someone has traced the plate to an address. If someone then hacks/tracks traffic cameras and realizes when your plate isn't at the home address, then what is capable...?

Really? You actually think people are doing this kind of thing?

It is a weird world that we live in Randy. I can't believe that our burglars kept coming back and were ringing to see if we were home before hand :(

The technology is there to track where every picture was taken that is posted on the web. Too many examples of hackers hacking into "secure" networks a getting things that they shouldn't be able to get.

Can it happen: yes. Do I think it happens: too many news stories out there of crazy things happening all because of computers and the internet these days. Better safe than sorry.
