Hi .
Please can some one help . I bought my gl 1100 wing as a non runner due to it had ran a few bearings , I had the engine completely overhauled , crank and bearings , rings ,carb stripped and cleaned ,with new parts , after assembly , the engine cranks but refuses to start , engine has a excellent cranking power , but back fires a lot . Cam timing is according to specs , battery is fully charged ,valve clearance to specs , even tried jumping it , still nothing . Used starter fluid , nothing . On cranking , I have checked power draw on battery , it goes down to 11,89 v . . Checked carburettor fuel cups drain plug , unscrewed and fuel drains out , so there is fuel .checked all fuses , fine . also removed spark plugs and squirted fuel inside and replaced ,tried to crank , still nothing .I even squirted a little oil into the intake so as to increase the compression , the oil burns up due to the smoke I see coming out of the exhaust , but still no start .
Plenty of spark at the spark plugs . Even tried depressing the clutch lever while cranking .

I have not connected all the wires as yet , only have connected the alternator and electronic distributor wiring . Is there any thin else that I have missed that you can advise me .
:thanks:
kind regards
Anthony

Welcome to the site Anthony! :clapping:

Check to be sure the green ground wire is attached at the coils to the frame. Engine will not start if not attached. It is the main ground for the entire electrical system. Also, at the coils, where the frame of the coil pack bolts onto the bike's frame, be sure that is really clean. This is the ground connection for the coils.

Welcome to the CGW Forums, first off.

As someone who has gone thru this exact scenario on more than one occasion, two things come to mind.
First is the ignition rotor is 180* off....it can be done....I've done it...TWICE.
Second, the plug wires were not re-installed onto the proper plugs.
You say you have good spark at the plugs, so that should rule out a loose/bad ign ground. The backfiring a lot leads me to think the plugs are firing at the wrong time, so I would first check the plug wire routing to confirm it is correct. If the wiring checks out, then it would seem the ignition rotor is 180* off. Good luck...hope you get it fired off and running soon. The gang here is ready to help with suggestions, and advice...one way or another, we'll help get it goin! :good:

Well, if you're getting compression, the valve timing is right, you're getting fuel, and there's spark at the plugs, there are only two possible reasons for a no-start - it's flooded with too much fuel (not likely, but possible), or the spark plug wires/coil leads are crossed up. The front plugs (#1 and #2) fire off one coil, and the rears (#3 and #4) fore off the other. It's really easy to get them reversed. As a last resort, +1 on what AApple says about the ignition pulser rotor. Hopefully, that's not the problem!

First. Welcome from SE Texas!! :moped:

Second. Who the hell did you get to rebuilt that engine? :builder:

There really ain't many of us on here that have done that, there are a few but not many.

If you have backfiring then I don't believe you have a 180° out situation, sounds more like a fuel thing to me.

Hi
Thank you all for your input and suggestions .
I am a qualified motor mac ,and I have overhauled the engine by my self .The tests that I have tried so far to get the engine to fire up are ,

I have checked cam timing numerous times , even reset the cam timing to fire on the fourth cylinder first leaving the ht leads in the same position ,
Can the ignition pulse rotor shaft be installed 180 deg , off on the wing . I know that the shaft has a dowel or slot that locates the shaft in its correct position and connects only one way , I could be wrong , please advise .
Also jumped the clutch lever switch wiring and tried , depressed clutch lever , switched plug leads around , still will not start up .

Could be valves sticking open slightly especially if you knurled tha valve guides.

Yes the rotor can be 180 out and the alignment pin falls out easily so it could be in any position. Several have fought that very issue.

Thank God , and all you guys advise , Tried to check the pulse gen rotor from the back , could 'nt reach or see any thing , so I pulled the engine out of frame and found the bolt securing the rotor had come loose and the rotor was running free. reset the rotor facing no 1 coil , and the light blue wire on the coil pick up , fit engine back and connected wiring and it fired up first time .
Thank you again guys , great being on this forum .
thanx Anthony
