The fairing deflectors mostly blast the driver.
Having never been a passenger on mine I couldn't say but my son say's he can feel it some.
I find when it's HOT there's nothing will help more than stopping and wetting my hair and shirt. Then my legs are cooking.
I haven't riden in real humid weather but I hear even wetting down doesn't help, can actually make it more uncomfortable.

I know it sounds crazy, but on the hottest humid days, I ride with my Frogg Togg rain gear on! It is so lite, it acts like a shadow and prevents radiant sunlight from penetrating yet lets the breeze pass through.

I'm not gonna kid ya, stop and go traffic it gets warm no matter what! :heat:

But get out on the road and these Frogg Toggs also stop wind burn without stopping the breeze!

I got a cheap leather jacket and driving through the desert I can zip the lapels all the way up to my neck, then unzip the sleeves to funnel in 70 mph wind, and unzip the two vents on the back. The jacket inflates like a balloon. Even in 100f temps this circulation of hot air keeps me....well, not "cool" but not miserably hot either. Really quite tolerable till I stop. I don't even swet till I stop.

My passengers say they feel less air with the wrap around windshield, but I certainly feel more than with the Vetter windshield. My wrap around feels more like a turbulence starting around the back of my ears and blows forward, blowing my beard up into my face and eyes when I try to let it all hang out. Then I have to comb all the knots out when I get somewhere. So I usually tuck my beard down inside the front of my jacket. This works great when it's cold out.

Interesting. It was pictures of your bike that got me to look at the wrap around style windshields. I've been thinking about adding some air deflectors out of thin lexan to try to keep the air from pulling into the vacuum from the sides. I'm just not sure where most of it is coming from. I've seen these add-ons for the 1800's and wonder how much they would help.

I think I could quick mount something like this made out of lexan without drilling any holes. I'm just not sure where most of the air is comming in from. I guess once my big shield arrives I could mount some string to the fairing edges and go for a ride.

It seems there are two camps of riders. Those that want the air deflected away and those that want the air pulled in to stay cool.

From what I can figure the air is a buffeting mostly which is caused by a lower pressure behind the shield so your getting hit from the sides as the air rushes into a vacuum.
That's why I added a center vent in the shield to try and equalize the pressures some.
It might have helped alittle.

It seems to me any additional deflectors on the shield and a larger shield is going to make this pressure difference even more so.

Just curious. Does any one know if Honda designed GL1100 Hondaline fairings using windtunnel?

I was reaslly impressed by the fact that fully faired BMW R100RS has lower coefficient of drag than naked version. It's the first fully faired motorcycle designed with windtunnel, I hear.

Anyway, maybe you need to attach lots of strings and ride on a freeway to figure out where the turbulence is coming from. :hihihi:

Thanks for the heads up on that site.

I had no idea how prolific that guy was or how similar our Hondaline fairings are to the Windjammer. Very cool.

Certainly no windtunnel test. Just CAD (Cardboard assisted design) :hihihi:

Just looking at the fairings it looks like the Hondaline is a narrower Windjammer. Would this be correct? From the TufftTesting picture above it looks like most of the spill comes from the lower sides of the windshield.

I can't wait for my fairing to arrive so I can get out that ball of yarn.

Have been to Vetter's site but didn't notice he did aerodynamic tests of any kind. Then again, he now pursues that ultimate MPG motorcycle thing and sells fish like full fairings.

I cannot imagine fully faired GW having lower Cd than naked version, though.

Just thought I would post my initial impressions on this windshield. It's the Slipstreamer wrap around.

When I bought the bike it had a stock windshield on it and after riding it for a while I cut it down some because the top edge was right in my line of sight. I'm 5'-7". I could now see over the windshield but noticed a lot more wind noise and my wife immediately mentioned and increase in turbulence for her.

This wrap around is huge. I'm now looking through the windshield with the edges far out of my line of sight. It's like a car.

It is definately quieter and more enjoyable. It is perfectly clear with no distortion. Oddly enought, because the edges are completely out of my sight, it feels like I have no windshield at all. The only thing I'm aware of is the top of the fairing itself and the guage cluster. It feels like riding a naked bike without any wind. Weird. This may change as I get some scratches or hazing on the windshield but for now its great. I haven't had the wife on it yet but I'm sure she's going to love it.

The only downside I see that from an appearance standpoint it definately leans towards touring as opposed to sport and I'm positive I'll have to clean the windshield everytime I stop for gas. I'll update my impressions once we get more miles on it but for now I'm pleasantly surprised.

:headscratch: But...but...it's a touring bike! :smilie_happy:
It looks good, for sure. :good:

Jorg, Just make sure you use the lemon Pledge liberably. It really helps in the rain & with bugs. Besides it smells nice too. Cheers Angela aka fysty-1

I thought you were going to attach winglet type extensions to the existing shield.

"Feels like naked w/o the wind" Hmmm... sounds very nice.

Lemon Pledge???
At first I thought you were pulling my leg but apparently not.
I've been using this https://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/H ... ?locale=en which I discovered by accident worked well on my windshield.

I had been using this
https://www.cruisercustomizing.com/slips ... LIP-S-CP-M but found that the wax was actually clearer and left less haze. Problem with the wax is it's so thick that using it on the road would be hard.

I was just going to mount this windshield for an extended 2-up road trip we have planned this summer and then use the short shield around town and put the winglets on for day trips. The way this shield works I may just leave it on period. We'll see what it's like around town once it gets hot out.
