Hey Brian. Not sure if you are aware of this but the stator is a major problem on the 1200. Most people are putting on an external alternator on it instead of changing the stator. I did mine this summer, it's a bit of work but you don't have to worry about having to pull the engine everytime. From what I read a new stator can last from 1000 miles to 50000 miles, but they don't last. If my alternator craps out it will take an hour at the most to change it.

It's a thought, but... with the miles that I think this bike actually has on it, I am not going the poor boy route. I think I would rather take the time and pull the motor and keep it original.
 
It's most that we hear about going to external.
There are many thousands of 1200's out there running fine on the original.

Though I like the added power and ease of an external, I'd be more inclined to stay original on a nice 1200. Especially a 84 standard.
 
+1 on keeping an internal stator. Do check all the connections as per Joes effort with Hooch first.
