ECM will go unused. C5 ignition will not use any of the stock ignition. Especially installed in an 1100 bike.

So if it can be mounted properly within the pulse generator housing, screw placement and shaft length matches points style engine, it turns into a hard wired project to delete the ECM. Ok, I see what your saying. I hope it can be accomplished, the ECM's are scarce and pricey. Would be another first for CGW.

The C5 1100 kit replaces the electronic pickups in the rear.
I won't know about fitment until I get the engine, if the 84 rear housing and shaft dimensions are the same as the 1100.
With what I know about the 1200, all that would need to be done is unplug the stock ecm and provide power from the kill switch to the C5. Some hard wire but not much?

Yes it would be another first.
I talked to Paul at C5 this morning, he hasn't sold one for a 1200 yet.

Sorry to hear about the delay, If I had a truck I would just go get it for you but I only have a car and besides the weather outside is frightfull., I really should have a truck but my car gets better milage then the wing.

Oh man, traffic was insane this morning.
Basically I couldn't get out of the valley to go east.
One way the reservoir had roads closed which jammed other streets, the other way a jackknifed truck had 5 lanes closed down to 1 with a 10 mile backup!
I was just coming up to that when I got the emergency call so I bailed out at the last off ramp.

Not a good morning but at least there was a break in the weather so I could get the call done.

+1 on the luck Dan, i'll pray for you..i hope he told you it was a good motor..but consider 40 dollars, you might want to take your meter and check the ohms on the stator wires, and maybe an electric 150 lb. impact with a some metric sockets, and your compression tester, just some thoughts, no need in buying a boat anchor, if it's bad.

For $40 I would get that boat anchor! There is about $200 worth of parts on that motor!

:good: +1!

The seller is being straight up with me.
He said he bought it about 2 years ago in case he needed any parts for his 85.
Guy he bought it from told him it came out of a wrecked bike.
I understand there's no guarantees but with what I know about 1200 engines they have a better oiling system and primary chain as well as a bigger clutch so even if it's high mileage I stand a better chance over finding a good 83 1100 engine, of which I've been through 3 with loose bearings and low oil pressure.

Beauty is only skin deep and the outside looks really good, but i have one in my shop floor that looks good too, but it's not worth 40 dollars..maybe at the scrap yard....got hot to many times by the owner, low compression, sand in oil and in the heads, water pump bad, oil pump bad, so many things can happen to a motor.

Even if it's toast, the starter, valve covers, front and rear covers, etc. will sell on ebay for decent money. I'm thinkin' and hopin' that it'll be OK. We'll take a wrench with us and give the crank bolt a twist, maybe pull a spark plug. If Dan doesn't want it, I'll give him $40 for it, and cover his gas cost.

Picked up Steve83 at 8 am for the 4 hour round trip.
Sure made the drive shorter having Steve along to talk shop.
Thanks again Steve.

The engine looks good, shifts through all the gears.
2 things right off, the lower right valve cover bolt is stripped or broken. The final gear cover is leaking oil when the engine tilted to the right for the ride home. Don't know what's up there.
Either someone took that cover off and just didn't seal or the right side took a hit.
Will know more later.

Nothing better than a boys own adventure :good:
Good luck with your 1200 Dan, you may need a bigger shed. :yes:

It was a pleasure, Dan! It'll be interesting to see how this one works out. I don't see any obvious damage in the CL pics, but you might want to look at the lower righr rear corner of the case, near the drain plug. Hard to tell from this pic, but it might be a trouble spot...

This engine looks VERY promising:

* Starter sounds good.
* Compression on 3@ 165. 4th is 175.
* Oil is clean
* Antifreeze looks clean
* Inside valve covers and around rockers are clean, no sludge.
* Oil pumped up right away while cranking.

Has the original bakelite water pump, small amount of play.
That's getting changed out. I have a new one in the the 1100 runner.

Stator is charred.
Going to replace it with one I have.

Rear cover off:
Real clean inside.

The ignition housing and center drive pin are identical to the 1100 so the C5 will bolt right on!
Very cool.

I thought the 1200 clutch was bigger than the 1100 but it measures the same diameter and thickness. Ah, maybe a different year 1200 is bigger. Was hoping the 84 was bigger but no biggy.

The starter and pump chains feel tight so I think I got lucky here with a low mileage engine.
Yay!

Only damage I see so far is one fin is broken off next to the oil drain plug but there's no leak so should be ok.
