I think you got a bargain from your info. Glad to hear that the c5 will work since I also have an 84 engine that might need that in the future. The stator may be dark due to the fact that they started allowing oil to circulate through the stator housing in 84 but it also could just be burnt up, just have to test it. They had major stator problems in 84 and factory recall on them, if that particular engine received a new stator the rear case should have some punch marks visible from the left side. Can't remember if there in a straight line or diamond shape, something Honda came up with to ID whether the recall was done or not. The stator is also suppose to be 350 volt (29 amp) but I can't remember if that occurred in 84 or took place in the 85-87 when they changed the rear cover. Congrats.

Congrats Dan. In agreement with the stator colour just test it as I described to Joe in his endeavors, continuity and then current test ( 12v between phase legs momentarily)

Nah, that stator is toast.
Besides, this damage decides it:

Rotor nut was loose so the rotor rivets were grinding away at the windings and stator mounting screws....

Rear cover ground.....

It's getting this.....

And swapping in the 83 rear cover because I'm using the cable clutch instead of the hydraulic and the 84 cover doesn't have the cable mount....

The 83 candidate I have that I was going to clean up and use, is in bad shape.
Lot's of rust.
Glad this 84 is looking good.

As far as being a bolt in deal I won't know for sure until I get to mounting it up but it should be pretty straight forward.

Dan, my 1200 had the same deal near the oil drain, except mine was just cracked. It hasn't broken off yet. It must be a weak spot that breaks easily when set down a bit too hard or even tipped it on that side??

In the natural order as things go.....the top oil line is just enough in the way for my coolant feed fitting.

I may tap in at the head fittings.
Looks like the only other option since the sensor fittings aren't npt threads.

Turns out the temp sensor thread is almost the same as 3/8" npt so I might tap in there.

Tap in at this point seems to be better because if pulling from the head fitting, the reduced flow past the temp sensor may affect getting an accurate coolant temp reading.
