Former '82 GL1100 "The Slug"
My '82 was given to me in fairly bad shape many moons ago. In the process of stripping the bike down, I removed the self cancelling bank sensor and wires (and stupid me tossed them with so many other gems that I didn't know I would need later). The '82 turn signal/headlight controls were shot and severely sun damaged at the time so I took the control unit from my wrecked '81. My question is, does the '82 controller work any different than the '81? I am looking at a replacement bank angle sensor (plus wiring) and I think I may still have my '82 self cancelling unit in the old wire harness. Do I need anything else to make it work?

You should be able to patch it back together but why bother? Self canceling signals on my 84 are just plain annoying.

I love the self cancel.
If you need any parts Gerry, I may have it.
Thanks Dan! I checked the parts fiche and it looks like the '81 handlebar unit is a different part number than the '82. I have started the process of rounding parts and found a NOS bank angle sensor. Looks like I might need the wiring assembly (plus mounting bracket and bolts) from the sensor to the turn signals and maybe the correct handlebar unit?

I found my '82 cancel unit still attached to the old wire harness in storage.

BTW, how does the self cancel operate? Currently, I just push the lever back and forth manually. Does the lever return to center after it cancels?

Well my experiences have been great using it so I'll help Gerry. :cheeky:

The button is held until it's called on to cancel.
Inside the control is a servo that kicks in to release it.

There are quite a few parts involved in the system.
Let's see...
Speed sensor in the speedo.
Angle sensor by the regulator.
Turn sensor in the steering neck.
Actuator in the left control.

I think that's everything.

Speed sensor in the speedo.

I have an '81 speedo. Most likely no sensor?
Right, no sensor in the 81.

Well, I guess I might have to consider getting an '82 speedo. I have been enjoying slowly piecing the bike back to OEM '82 for a while now and the self cancelling turn signal is next.

Don't know if I have a speedo but I'll look.

What else do you need?
If you have an '82 speedo, that will help!

Still need the bank angle sensor wiring (NOS sensor already on the way) and attachment bracket and an '82 actuator in the left control.

I like the Valk signal switch. Just push the center to cancel. No clicking cancel while I'm riding.
The CBRs are the same and I must admit I prefer it to auto cancel. If you only ride the one bike with auto cancel then it is probably great. When I was swapping between Dads 82 and the Rats Nest I always seemed to forget to cancel the blinkers on the Rats Nest.

Check your speedo Gerry as the Rats Nest speedo has the self cancelling wiring.

Do you want 82 specific? I'm sure what speedo I would have would be either 83 or 84S.
Would an '83 work with the current speedo wheel at the axle? I do not remember if that one is from the '81 or the original '82.

This is back of 84 speedo.
The 2 wires is the speed sensor, same on 83.

Unsure.
