I'll do some searching about compatibility and also try to pull my current speedo to see what is back there.

(Might surprise myself and find out I actually still have my '82 speedo installed........very wishful thinking!) :hihihi:

Looks like '83 was the year that the hub was changed (and used for many other models) and was used for the 1200 also. The wheel gear fits differently and uses a different speedo cable connection. The '81 and '82 speedo is also different.

Well, looks like I absolutely have an '81 speedo........

BUT, the good news so far is that the '81 and '82 wheel gear are the same part number. I have a bank angle sensor coming and have the turn signal cancelling unit.

I still need the '82 speedo, left side handlebar unit and wire harness that connects the bank angle sensor.

Left side handle bar unit is in! :yahoo: (Not sure, but starting to think it is from an '83?)

There is an extra set of two wires coming out of the unit that are green and blue/black. I checked '82 and '83 wiring diagrams and cannot find those two wires connecting separately. There are green and blue/black wires in the harness. I know green is the ground, but cannot see any bullet connectors on my '82 harness for them. :head bang:

This is back of 84 speedo.
The 2 wires is the speed sensor, same on 83.

Dan, does the '84 tach fit into the 1100 gauge unit brackets?

Also, do you have any idea where the two wires coming out of that tach connected? Was it into individual bullet connectors or a harness?

Been having real fun trying to match up my '82 wire harness with any of the schematics! :heat:

I have it stretched out and have been checking each plug against the schematics and it is a real pain!! :rtfm:

Not to jump in where not sure, :nea: but the bracket on my one 84 standard tach has a place for a cable, is driven by electrical, & does not match the speedo's. Bought it from the original owner, & he says it came that way, made in 83, #177, a very early one :headscratch: The other 84 matches perfectly, & has no hole for a cable. So it looks as if your answer is yes, it should fit.

Not sure what your question is. That pic is of an 84 speedo.

The 84 tach fit perfectly into the 83 mounts.
I had to wire new for the electronic tach because I wired it to the C5. I don't think the wires were in my 83 loom.

First question answered! The '84 fits in the '83 mount.

The second question related to the speed sensor wires coming out the back of the '84 tach and where they connected.

Man oh man......I have thrown away way too many good parts and now I am feeling REALLY STUPID!!

Pulled my windshield, faux tank and headlight to compare the wire harnesses. No doubt, the '81 and '82 harnesses have quite a few differences. The '81 speedo does have the speed sensor for the rear shock warning light and mine is currently working great since I pulled my air shocks! Funny thing, at idle and stopped the light is off. Reach 10 MPH and the light comes on like it should (no air). Come to a stop and it shuts off again. Perfect! The sensor wires coming out of the speedo are only 2 wires rather than the 3 on the '82. Really wishing I hadn't sold my '82 speedo and tach years ago. (Not sure they worked since they were so weather beaten.)

Started looking into the mount for the steering head sensor .........and........STUPID!!! I REMOVED the '82 steering stem and triple tree when I swapped out the better looking parts from the '81! The '82 has the bolt holes and mount for the steering head sensor!!! :cheeky: :head bang:

Ya know......ya gotta be real careful about what parts you throw away!!!

That's your feminine side coming out Gerry!! :smilie_happy:

Other side of the coin, don't throw much out as far as bike parts, :nea: go through boxes, bags, bins,& piles of parts.Know theres one here, :headscratch: where the hell did it get to?

I know what you mean! :hihihi:

Replacement '82 steering stem with top and bottom triple tree, steering sensor plus mounting bracket, wire harness, cover plate and rubber boot on the way for $30 including shipping! :clapping:

I know it might seem ridiculous to go through this effort for self cancelling turn signals, but to me, it is just as much fun to tinker with these things while bringing the bike back to as much of the OEM items for '82 as I can.

I might not be much on tinkering with carbs or even think about single carbs, but I sure can work on wire harnesses and tinker with everything else!

Not ridiculous to me by any means.
Self cancel is a mechanical thing. Just like the magic behind the 1200 hydro valve adjusters, mechanical stuff is just cool to me whether it's better or not.
