I need a new left front one..

but I might as well change them out - just the front to stainless - if I can get away with just doing that.

I've done it on my 78 but man there is a bunch of stuff in the way it seems. I haven't even figured

out what is what.

I need to read the manual sure.

Any advice? I know they are linked but not sure what that means. do I have to do all three at the same time?

thanks~!

One front is operated by the hand master cyl only. The other is operated by the foot brake master along with the rear caliper. Linked side has a hardline along the frame to the front flex line.

no big deal pony ...theres alot of steel brake line in the rear pedal opreated front brake to begine with ....there some kits already to made to change them over ...i was never in the camp for linked brake till i got my 83 ....but i sure like them now ....good brakes ...dose great in the gravel rosds i have to travel and i always thought that it would be terrible on gravel roads ......

There's no requirement the back hose has to be done but it's a good idea because it's probably just as old as the fronts. Besides you'll have to bleed the rear also so might as well get it over with.

I have an 83 I'm going to upgrade and don't know much about linked brakes. If you operate the front brake without the back brake, does it operate both front calipers? If it doesn't, I can see why some people aren't fans. Anyone have experience with an emergency situation stopping it? I am thinking it would maybe cause the back tire to get squirrel-ly on you.

The rear brake operates the right front caliper and rear, the front lever operates only the left.

I'm a fan of linked brakes. A few emergency stops I found out they work very good mashing both brakes.

So when I order lines - I'm just ordering the stainless flex correct.

I thought I could get away with just the front flex for now. Too bad the one that is leaking is the left front hose - right where the fitting meets the hose.

thanks

Dumb Q, Do I need to remove the fairing? Sure would be a lot easier if it wasn't there. then i could try and repair a crack....

JD- nice looking 83 - I would have loved to get a black one but this that turned up is brown - couldn't pass it up.

thanks

Just changed out the lines on my '83 standard. Bought a set off eBay for an 81 Aspencade project somebody never finished, but couldn't use them cause I didn't know about the linked brakes. :headscratch: Had the left front installed before I knew the others wouldn't work. :nea: Removed it and ordered a set of carbon covered stainless from HEL. Had to send my old lines 'cause he didn't have a pattern for the '83 linked lines. Great service, fair price, fast shipping - these guys are good. Had to remove the tank shelter and fork emblem to install the right side lines - thankfully, no fairing to remove :yahoo:

Anyway, I still have the eBay lines, essentially unused. Let me know if you want the left front Pony.

Hey Fbesq,

really the left front is the only one that is leaking. I really don't want to spend $ on the lines right now. So the left front one you got on ok and it was the same size and all? If so I would be interested - can ya send me a p.m.? Thanks

how much for the hel lines? I have a line on those for $130+- on the other gl site...

I want to get some speed bleeders too, cause I 'suck' at brake bleeding...

I just did a nearly complete brake overhaul. I say nearly because I did not replace the pistons in the calipers and I rebuilt the master cylinders in 2009. I bought new lines from Lopeha on the Saunders site. I got caliper rebuild kits from Parts-N-More, new wheel bearings and seals from Dennis Kirk, new pads off ebay and had my disks reground by the guys at TrueDisk.net.

I had two issues. The rear rebuild kit had the wrong size seals but I was able to get replacements from the dealer (actually had them in stock). I was able to use the rest of the pieces from the rebuild kit, so I won't be returning it.

The other issue I had was getting a seal on the new rear line where it connects with the steel tube line. Given that the front line which is operated by the rear master cylinder has the same kind of connection, I think my rear line must have been buggered up. I went to the local Advance Auto and rented a brake line flairing tool and fixed that.

The worst part of the whole adventure is that the weather has sucked and I have not had a chance to test it.

Andy,

I am trying not to go there on this bike... I just want to fix what is broke and not break anything and have to fix it.......ifffffff ya know what I mean.

I ordered the two front hel from loepha.
I totally understand. I decided to do it because a 1500 was offered locally on Craigslist for cheap. I thought about it but decided that putting some effort into my 1100 was cheaper.

I am glad that someone else had posted about H-E-L and Loepha... I've only been on THIS site for a few days, but I've frequented Steve Saunders' site for a few months now. I've also got an order going into H-E-L for the SS lines for my 83. When I put her away for the winter last weekend, I took off all the plastics (fairing, side covers, saddlebags, seat, faux tank, etc.) and took a look at the brake lines so I'd have an idea as to what I'm getting myself into.

I could NOT BELIEVE how simple it actually looks!!! I didn't know about the hard lines from the masters and thought I'd be having to snake my new lines manually. Whenever I saw how accessible the hoses/connectors were, I was pumped...Can't wait to get the new lines in and try them out. . .

Glad I saw this thread, also....It only goes to boost my confidence on doing my own work, even with my limited mechanical background. Thanks!

the only thing you won't get with the hel lines is a spring/holdown that goes around the line fitting and holds it secure to a bracket where the ss. goes into the hard line.

the old one is too big for the smaller hel fitting.

i just McGroodered it.

they should have the size rt. they sent me overlong and no doubt made a correction in their books/database.

i just McGroodered it.

I have no idea what that means...LOL

I'm guessing that it has the same meaning if I were to say something was "Mickey Moused" or "Disneyized" - which is to say you made your own cheap modification to make it work...

Can you tell me exactly how you "McGroodered" it so that I might try a similar procedure? ? ?

Thanks, again.

Thanks, Pony, for the explanation. . .

Sorry to say, the last time I watch Saturday Night Live, John Belushi and Chevy Chase were still on it. . . .LOL
