I rode home about a week ago, as I was parking, the engine started making a noise like 2 fine tooth gears slipping against each other. The engine shut down, and would not re-start. I assumed it was a timing belt issue. I have the engine out, timing belts are intact, and valve train all seems to do what it should. Does any-one have an idea what may have happened, or where to look before I tear it down?

Does it crank over?

If the starter makes noise but doesn't turn the engine, I'd start by taking it out to see if it turns while jumped to battery power. Could be stripped planetary gears, could also be starter clutch issues.

It cranks over fine, and I thought I heard a faint banging noise. I have it out and the crank and valve train turn fine.

I don't have a compression tester.
Use your thumb as a rough guide to compression

Engine is out, should I use the starter or hand turn?

I will check the oil and filter for metal, and the ignition drive. I also recently changed the fuel pump with a new one, I'll look there too. I will report back in a day or 2, Thank you to all for the help.

OK, I opened up the filter and it has fine metal on the outside, and some black stuff. I pulled out the side filter and it only has a small amount of black stuff on it as shown. The ignition center cup rotates with the engine, and the cup also has some rotation on the shaft if you turn it with fingers, but it seems spring loaded and it seems to have a stop to it. Any ideas where to look next?

Dont like the look of that screen..I was talking about the generator rotor bolt not the ignition but I only heard that it makes some noise , not sure if your gear grinding noise is similar just something to check.
You have some kind of grinding going on, are those shavings magnetic? can they be picked up with a magnet or are they aluminum?

I suppose since steel is used for high stress parts and gearing I would tear it down starting with the rear cover and look for the culprit, I do not know these engines well enough to guide you to the trouble but steel shavings tells me something major internally has failed.
