Tried Panosonic camcorder with external mic. No wind noise but 7 year old camcorder only supports rudimentary mpeg4 320x240 (15fps?). And I couldn't find g.726 audio codec for win7 so had to open it in WinXp and save as wmv, what a pain!
But at least I know external mic works. Too bad X170 doesn't have external mic input.

that was cool if i ever get a sidecar rig im going to have to build a leaner it was a great looking ride as for how it handled ....yah the sound was good but i was more impressed by your bike

The sound is very good in that video, where did you put the mic?

I put it on the rear seat facing rearward. I put make-shift wind muff (?) made with some foam sheet.
The mic cord was too short. That's the only location I could put it. Sans top of the trunk.

gee that bike sounds great and runs like a champ and I love the leaner rig  I want one now the next big purchase that I do will be one of those for the aspincade. good stuff the camera. seamed to be in tighter maybe it needed to be opened on the zoom. as I loved the other video you did with the rig in sight all the time. even the hand that came out the window and back in then shut the window. Chasrogers   :rocks: :music: :clapping: :clapping: :hi: :hi:

Thanks again, Chas.

The zoom was fully out. That's all I could do.

I found this one.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HOPUPC/ref=cm_rdp_product

It's a HD camcorder with external mic input. That's what I needed. And it's only $113. :head bang:
Oh well, I guess I can return X170 if the box idea doesn't work.
Still the advantages of X170 are wide-angle lens and wireless remote (radio).
You can by wireless remote for Kodak Zi8 but that's IR so you need to aim at the camera. And probably the lens is not that wide angle.

ya that is the problem give some here to get some there and so on and so on. no happy medium in most case's :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy:

After a few days of googling it appears low-end camcorders don't have external mic input at all. There are only a few who do. And high-end ones cost $1000.

Kodak Zi8 seems to be already a few year old product. I may buy one before it's discontinued.

As usual, PCs and consumer electronics become obsolete very quick. It's a good thing that our 30 year old GLs are still very useable!

I recorded a trip thru the Park on youtube then posted it here , they removed the tunes I had on my video because I did not have permission to use it... Thata learn me... :smilie_happy: :hihihi: :hihihi: I got into the trouble again... :smilie_happy:

Is YouTube police that swift and strict?
Did you get a warning from them?
I see copy right'ed TV clips and such removed a year or so after they were posted.
Did you use separate sound track (i.e. very clear music)?
Is it okay if it is mixed with engine and other sound?

If it is copyrighted and you do not own the rights or have permission, they will mute the audio. Period.

Okay. But the question is how soon?
Because I see lots of video clips with music on YouTube. Like this one.

It's posted three years ago and still going.

I have to admit that I am not interested in the latest music scene or whatever and the ones I noticed are from 80's and 90's. The copyrights expire after several years? I don't think ordinary YouTube posters will/can get permission to use them.

Or is there a easy way to get permission (i.e. pay a small fee) like iTune download nowadays?

It was ok for about two or three months and they removed the music with no warning, we stated it wasn't our music at the end of the video but I knew it could be pulled and it was, and I'm ok with it, and I knew better but did it anyway  ...I shaw not do that again. .Actually my daughter put the tunes in it :music3: I just wanted the normal sound but there was so much wind noise  we wanted to cover it up with music..

Interesting.
So maybe the copyrights expire after several years?
I guess your daughter put the real current music.

I don;t know how they do it. If I did I might find a way to beat their system. Get my drift?
I suspect it may have something to do with why it takes all night to upload a video to youtube. That and they are owned by ....who now?....Google? (???) So....music is for sale.

I have posted videos here https://community.motozania.com/ser...=recent&tab=yes&includeVideo=on&d-7095067-p=1 and had no problems with muting the audio. The only problem is they only allow you 1 gig, where youtube allows you 2 gigs. Both allow you up to 10 minutes, so it's just a matter of rendering a smaller file, which reduces quality of course. Perhaps they don't have a stake in the music industry. Even though the site appears to be all about advertizing your bizzness/popularity/exposure. But all you have to do is join and you can post pix and vids and nobody messes with you.

There is a lot of free music out that can legally be used. Not only that many times you can get permission to use copyrighted material as long as you aren’t using it for profit. Our church pays royalties to many contemporary artists that we use and the fees are very reasonable. The artists that create the music have a right to be compensated for their work.

No problem with that. But once they sell me the CD, they are compensated and it should be mine to use. To me, it's like selling me a GoldWing, then telling me I can't post a video of the ticking sound it makes.

I fully agree. Does Chevy care if I loan my car to a Ford driving friend? Performers beg media to play their stuff. Not the other way around.

I have nothing against protecting creators against the guy who makes thousands of copies and sells them for a few bucks out of the trunk of his car, or over the internet.

But I think this whole intellectual property thing has been blown way out of proportion. If I go to a legit source and pay full retail price, I should own that copy and have the right to personal use.

I got Drift X170 camera and built the enclosure below.

Rode the usual route for the test. Love the wide angle of the camera. It records avi and mov format. I used avi but Windows Movie Maker couldn't load it due to missing codec. What a crap. Downloaded freeware Avidemux.

https://avidemux.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html

For now just edited out frames but it looks powerful enough to do sound editing also.

The mic picked up a lot of vibration from the bike. The plexiclass lid hit the aluminum case and made rattling noise. But no wind noise! So the potential is there. I will put rubber all over the place to reduce vibration. I guess wood or styroform is better material for the case than aluminum.
