Big Sur ride October 14,15

I ordered a 2 person tent with 2-1 person air mattresses and a pump for $50 on Amazon. $8 per mattress lol. If they last just the one night I'll be happy.

You can get these with a clamp bracket for the bars for a few more dollars which I used on Val. On the Rats Nest and the cars I use my original brackets with the USB charging head and metal holding clamps for the bigger phones.

If you're okay with buying an item and knowing every time you use it that it’s been reverse engineered from the original to be sold at a much reduced price to take away sales from the company that put out the time, money, and effort to make a far superior product.....then that's your choice.

You know, Dan, I used to firmly believe that. But, in the end, sometimes it's not about principle. (I can't believe I said that). But, sometimes, it truly is about economics and personal budget. Hard to ignore a significantly lower price for essentially the same product.

The other issue we have here is the cost of shipping as well as the conversion rate with the greenback. With the Chinese sellers they often include the shipping and can supply an item to me for less than the cost of a stamp to send a letter across town. :doh:

Good stuff that Loctite Moly - use it myself. As for economics and knock-off items, us Canucks just north of the border pay a premium to our friends in the south even for items in Canada. Suppliers have told me it is cheaper to ship south then in our own country. Not fair, but it's life.

Just finished the front brakes and a replacing the front caliper pivot bolts (sleeve Honda calls it). The old ones were rusted and once that happens no bringing this item back. Had to drive the pins out to get the pads off. Next time I do this will replace these as well. Back brake will be done after the Big Sur trip when I will take the back end off for lube and such. An oil change will be done this week in preparation.

Going to be a good ride and visit.

I’ve been sinking a lot of time and money into the 83 as well. Not so much for this trip as it just needed attention.

New rear tire. Old one was the original it had when I bought the bike, 17 years old date stamp lol. Lubed the splines as well.
Front and rear brakes. Still not great stopping power but better.

I should change oil yet, and fuel filter but otherwise ready to go!

Tent and sleeping bag arrived yesterday. Amazing how lite and compact the new items are. Getting all my gear sorted and ready.

Everything costs money, but the great part of this trip is that when it is over, regardless of who shows up, you will be glad that you did it and its one regret you will not have.

Looks fine. Both Brent (my son) and I at 6’3 going to be tight but doable.

You got me to thinking I should set up my new tent as well. Less than 5 minutes and the same coming down and back in the carrying case without a struggle.

Supposed to be 78"X78", going to be a tight fit. The sleeping cot I will be using is 79" long but will fit nicely. Gets me off the ground as well:

Lastly is the sleeping bag.

Packs into a 12" by 6" without crunching it down with the straps. Good down to 8 deg C - for an adult 195 cm and weighs in at 730 grams. The tent and the cot weigh in at 4 pounds each. Sure is a whole lot different from years gone by. Love new technologies.

Slaghost - like your thoughts on camping, but every now and then have to make a sacrifice for the pleasure of riding the bike.

But, when that sort of trip IS in the works, here's my tent. And, boy would I like to run up to Big Sur in this. Had it over to Yosemite a couple of years ago, but that's as close to the more northern coast it's been.

Dang, Dan, you're really getting me thinking about that area again. Sorry I'm not able to make this one.
