1991 CBR1000f Red
I keep taking on jobs that maybe don't need doing ( ie : preventative maintenance)
Mirror base was looking like it was ready to fail
Passion fingers used to remove the mirror glass
New master cylinder that I had purchased as spare for my August ride in the US. Installed as I didn't like the front brake performance, lever felt squishy.
Front discs were awfully glazed
Rough de glazing job with the BD power file
CBR1000f master cylinder installed, finally have front brakes that work and still have some in reserve.
Would like to clean up the discs some more and do some cross drilling to improve wet weather performance. A set if 82 brakes is probably what I really need, I keep looking at CBR calipers but they are designed for a bigger diameter disc.

Tony I like what you did there. Just making sure, but is this what you are referring to when you mention a power file?

Yes Brian that looks like a newer version but essentially the same 1/2" belt sander. Next time I will use a flap wheel sanding disc on the angle grinder which gives a much more professional finish. When we fixed the discs on the 82 Steve took me to HF where we bought a cheap grinder and flap disc which did a great job. I stopped past my daughters place on the way home from work and we had dinner together. Nice ride home in the dark and up the driveway, so far I think half my trips home on the a Rats Nest have been in the dark :good: :moped:

Tho's rotors look Great. What did you do to make them look so nice? did you have them turned or something? I would love to do my front and rear thanks..What is a BD File?

What grit of slap wheel would you use to clean up rotors?
I think 80 grit but Steve may have a better memory, higher grit will work but I prefer less than 120 grit for this type of job. You don't need to go too hard just cut the glaze, power file job looks good in the pics but isn't as good as it should be. Certainly nice to have operational front brakes again. CBR master cyl has me puzzled as it is smaller bore and has more grunt than the GW replacement cyl, I keep wondering if this is related to bore size or maybe that the Chinese master cylinders don't send all the fluid to the calipers ( some bypasses )

Look up six posts. That's what he means by a BD Power File.

Yea thanks . I just caught that. Really nice. @ first thought they were turned. belt sander I have. A good D/A as well nice job..

How about using a 3" belt sander?

I need to freshen mine up.
Front and rear breaks suck bad especially after the fronts got soaked with fork oil from leaking seals.
Ask skiri.
His 82 front is wonderful.

Should work ok Dan just go steady and you will get a good finish.
With the grinder and the flap wheel it is really easy to true up the surface and end up with a professional finish similar to flywheel grinding.

What is a flap wheel?
Flap wheel? What I call a flap wheel is a drill bit with 50 or so squares of emery cloth afixed to it so that when you spin the drill the flaps hit the surface..Never seen them as wide as a disc but no reason they dont make them that size.
A DA or orbital should work well too.

That is one kind, here is another. This one will eat material quicker so be careful.

truing up a rotor ..is best seen in sand paper on glass ....using the grit sand paper that creatres the most drag ... this tells you what cutting good ... id use no down pressure ... and maybe nice easy to do rotation and check scratch pattern if consistent..its not warped ..the double action sander do really well just let the tool run and float doing all the same ... come out really good

file.php

This is the type that I was referring to which goes on an angle grinder, just be careful with the coarse grit so that you don't lose too much material from the disc. It is easy to do the back surface as the offset will be up, I think it may be easier to do the outside (front) surface while still mounted on the bike with the wheel installed so that you can rotate the wheel easily.
Remember just a light skim to remove the glazing

Smaller m/c bore = more leverage, isn't it?
