Started at 7 am this morning. Was hoping to be riding by now. I was supposed to have a helper but he bcaked out so I was on my own. The longest part of the day was trying to hold that stupid boot out of the way and get that little clip off the drive shaft.
So after 12 hours to get the engine out it was time for a shower and some rest.

Thanks for all the support from everyone. Greatly lifted my spirits.

So here is a

pics. of my proigress.

Now question:
c5 006.JPG

Since my fan runs after riding for longer than 10 min my fan switch must be bad. Which one is it?
The red one?-I think is the oil sensor.
The one by the thermostat?
or the third one where the wire is still attached to the engine?

last question for right now:

The wire on the side of the motor with the red--What does this wire do?

Will update when somehting happens on this end.

Thanks greatly appreciated.

I took a boot off of a 77 one time and eventually zip-tied out of the way. I think that was the worst two hour job ever to remove only one cir-clip.

While it's out, are you doing anything more to it?

The red switch on top of the engine is the oil pressure switch, and the single-wire unit on the coolant housing is the sender for the temp gauge.

I used 3 small bungee cords to hold the boot back for the drive shaft clip install.

Good progress for one guy going at it, good job Wes.

While the engine is out it's a good time to clean that oil pickup screen.
Not required but it's easiest to get to now.
It's just forward of the oil level site glass, cover has 3 screws holding it on.
Will loose oil once you break the screws loose since your opening the bottom of the crankcase.

Drain the oil at the oil drain plug first!

I am going to clean out the oil screen.
And apply a quick coat of paint.
Any thing else I should consider while it is out?

The engine ran great before I took it out of the frame. Now I just hope it still runs when it gets back in place.
I replaced some stuff when I did the poor boy.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks Dan was not sure where that screen was at. The oil and h2o were drained before removing. But I assumed there would be more oil still in there.

Oh I thought you would remove the swing arm not the engine.

I would say it's not a one day job.

It took me:

2 hours to remove the fairing,
5 hours to remove the engine,
1 hour to deal with vacuum advance and install C5,
3 hours to install the engine,
4 hours to deal with wiring (including relay)
2 hours to put the fairing back on

Things to do while the engine is out:

If you have harsh clutch engagement, I recommend looking at clutch outer drum.
Most likely the slots where clutch disks/plates meet have indentations.
I whet-stoned them to be flat and now I don't have harsh engagement.

Those are great pictures of your clutch basket. I doubt the grooves will be much worse, but if they are, I would recommend finding another one.
On motocross bikes they use light weight aluminum baskets and the grooves can get so deep the clutch will not disengage.

I have never seen this on a street bike but perhaps other forum members have?

Doing this type of inspection while the engine out is such a great idea!!

Yes and the whetstone assures you take off no extra material. Looks great! :yahoo:

Well after driving school bus 3 days this week(I drive the spoorts teams to wherever), Putting my lawn mower back together, putting my 9n tractor back together-which now it will not start, I finally found some time and got the engine back in the frame tonight. 4 bolts are holding it up. Have not tackled the sir clip and boot yet. Did get the drive shaft started while putting engine back in frame.
I can not wait to see the differance-I hope there is a differance- in the way this bike performs. Maybe I will see by Monday.

Got the coils in place.Did a few odd ball things while engine was out.

The install of the c5 was a pice of cake.
It is just getting the motor and everything else back in is not a walk in the park.

I thought from the beginning it was more than I could chew--shoulda went with my first instinct.

With the ignition so buried inside these engines, you guys all need some kind of tattoo or "superbowl" ring to let others know you've been initiated into the club. I'm not sure I'd tackle that job. I've parted out Wings, but that easy. Putting them back together is the tough part.

I'd probably cheat and install the GL1000 kit with a cam...that would have been much easier. Wilcoy I give you two thumbs up for tackling this job!!
