I assume this is what you used.

Who knew, thanks for posting your experience. :good:

amazing how close these cooling systems are to not working ...there right on the edge always of failing ...and is the reason i ditch the heat shield and other things to widen the window some

Just to be clear, this is the good stuff you just put in, right?
My 1000 has been running hot. I've tried all sorts of things (including flushing with CLR) and just blamed the little fans I put in after installing an alternator. I'll have to check which kind of antifreeze I put in there when I get home.

From what I read that is the stuff he took out, some antifreeze is designed for the aluminum radiators maybe that was partly why..I always use the old green stuff silicate free of course..the tech brand from wal mart and always mix it myself.

I have a hard time believing a slightly thicker coolant is going to make it run warmer.
The radiator tubes are plenty large to allow it to pass through, unless maybe if the tubes are already clogged which then is a different problem.

This is the stuff I'm running, looks the same just doesn't say Dexcool on it.
1200 runs very cool, in fact too cool at times.

Dan I think it`s like Joe said, these bikes run on the border and just a little difference can make a change, perhaps your running a little rich and compensating with that, and or do you still have the plate behind the fan?
Thinking minor changes can make a difference.

I'm well aware the cooling system is marginal, I learned a lot about them when I compared the 1200 radiator to the earlier radiators, 1200 radiator is almost 30% less capacity in surface area.
I just don't buy that a coolant would throw an 1100 over the edge like it seems it did.

I am an absolute idiot!!! I am now home and checked the "Prestone DEX-COOL" bottle and IT IS CONCENTRATE......not 50/50!!!!

I really feel like a fool now.........next time, I won't just accept the free bottle of antifreeze from my daughter and ASSUME it is 50/50 mix...... :head bang: :Awe:

Maybe it`s the dex-cool coolant itself. Consumer report says.
https://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2 ... xcool.html
That is one of the articles we researched at my buddies place. Just to add, my daughter had used this product in the '02 Elantra that we know have up in NJ. It also had the Dex-Cool in it, but it was the 50/50 mix. I still have a 1/4 of it left in the other opened bottle and it is 50/50 mix.

2 years after I brought the car back from Florida, this past winter the heater stopped working. Thought it was the heater core but the engine started running hot also (in the winter no less). Opened up the system and just like the article stated, there was an orange looking mud running around in the radiator. Issue is, the radiator had been replaced 3 years ago so it was unlikely a bad radiator. I flushed the system and lots of junk and mud came out???? I know the system was completely flushed prior to the installation of the new radiator. The Dex-Cool ended up in the engine after the radiator was replaced because the thermostat crapped out in Florida so my daughter ended up buying the Prestone Dex-Cool because it happened to be on sale at Pep Boys at the time and was cheaper than the store brand coolant that day.

So, again, I agree with the article that the Dex-Cool has issues, just wish i had known it before this. No more Dex-Cool for me in any capacity. :ahem: :whip:

That 'splains it.

Gerry , I did probably the same research in places like Bob is the oil guy forum and wikipedia and generally all over google and found the same reports the down side is it turns to mud and becomes highly corrosive to the cooling system after it turns red and thickens up it creates acid.
Part of our "go green" attempts at caring for the animals and earth I suppose. Wiki has some good info on the different types of coolant and Bob`s forum has some good info too..Sticking with the old fashioned green stuff, glad I did the research..I might have bought something like that if it was on sale too.
BTW..Dan..your bottle isn't GM dex-cool , same manufacturer different product so I think your good.

Dan, I do understand your thinking. I have been looking for the article I read regarding the heavier (long life) anti freeze, and that is one of the comments they made that in certain older engines that they would run hotter. It didn't make a lot of sense to me at first, but as you look at the water pump it might make a little more sense. Each cooling system is designed to move a certain amount of coolant through the system, if the flow is reduced by adding a heavier coolant then that could easily explain the engine running hotter.

Along those lines one of my apprentices a few years ago added straight anti freeze undiluted to a truck, and it did run considerably hotter. We at first thought he didn't get all the air out but then discovered the problem. As soon as we put the proper mixture in it ran normal. Now I know that is an extreme example and long life antifreeze isn't that much heavier.

I'm going to run a test, I have a few gallons of pre mixed long life antifreeze and will try it in my bike and see what happens. Our valley temps have been running in the triple digit right now so it will be a good test. Right now she runs mid range no matter what the temp. Will post my results, mainly because I want to know for myself.
