Also...ether is VERY flamable....be vewy, VEWY careful spraying that stuff around a running, spark ignited engine, and do it with PLENTY of ventilation....unless you happen to like all the pretty colors in yer haid.....

Off topic, but I have an 8V92 Detroit in my MCI coach. Back on topic, air leaks are annoying, potentially damaging, and knowing the basics of testing for them is something Dan might want to expand on. I am always interested in sharing notes with other gear heads to see how they do it.

Dan, do you test with engine cold or warm, and do you have a system for testing? (start at airbox and move down or start at engine or ???)
When the engine idle goes up, do you use other methods to pinpoint the leak? I want to steal your ideas :help:
 
when it comes to oldwings ive seen fire jump right put th e wires right there where one would be spraying ...to me its like super carburetor in a can ....it always last choice for me ... cigareet is pretty good on oldwing as there isn't much air to deal with when fan isn't on it visable and safer to me and cheaper it seems :mrgreen:as good I doubt it but it what i do mostly :builder: :headscratch:
 
I prefer WD40 to find leaks. You can use the straw to pinpoint them pretty well. I prefer cold idle just after starting as then the leaks are most apparent. I prefer starting at carb linkages and then ports and hoses down to connections to manifold and manifold to heads.
 
I've tried wd-40 but it never really pinpointed where the leaks were.
Ether there's no guess work. Idle speeds up or slows down, it's very obvious where the leak is.

Cigarette, not a bad idea.

Cigarette and ETHER!! :shock: Sure......go ahead.......you'll find your leak.....and maybe create a few more when it explodes! :smilie_happy:
 
A good, safe way to check for vacuum leaks is with a small propane torch. Put a section of rubber hose on the end, and use the hose to fish around the carb(s), intake, etc. I should first say that you don't actually LIGHT the torch...just use the propane gas. Doesn't take turning the valve very high. The propane gas will richen the mixture when it finds a leak, and the idle will go way up.

And, it should go without saying..

Dan, have you been tinkering with your single carb setup again? Any news from California we should know about?

I'm hoping you are organized enough to end up with a "shopping list" of parts for the rest of us. We are starting to get cool weather around these parts.
