Got to sit on the side of the freeway yesterday. Flat rear tire.....
Picked up something, could hear it flip-flip-flipping a little as I rode thru downtown Dallas in rush hour traffic. Wasn't gunna stop until I could get off to the side somewhere safe. Tire had other plans.....went all the way down in the worst possible place, so I slowed and rolled on down the road until I could get at least a couple of feet off the road.....on a bridge....left lane. :shock: Tire had a chunk of a steel belted tire stuck in it. Called insurance co to get a tow service. Lottsa fun waiting for that, with the traffic blastin by at record speeds, since it was just past the downtown bottleneck, where it opens up, and folks just put the pedal to da metal. And me with no-where to go if someone decided to swerve a few inches to the left. On the bridge, with a 40ft(or more) drop.....
Got it home, aired it up and looked, and there is a gouge down in the tread groove. Not even gunna mess with it this time. Gunna get another new tire and be done wid it. :sensored: :rant:
 
Glad you made it home, I had a blowout on one of those overpasses, had to change a flat on the drivers side in that little sliver of space, Cars just wipping by 65-70..I was glad to get out of there in one piece.

What you would gain in savings on tires, you would lose on Chiropractor bills.

One of my daughters bicycles had real neat tires. For every intent and purpose, they looked like regular bicycle tires. But in reality, they were filled with a soft, rubber/foam like substance that kept them from ever going flat or needing air........hmmmm...I wonder if that is possible for M/C tires? :read:

(I would never do that to ya Joel...but..... the information could be useful for many things.....and my portfolio has also taken a hit recently too so any tips on the tire company stock would be useful... :wave: :hihihi: )

Don't matter, Randy...none of them have survived anyway, other than the ones that were on it when I bought it.... :hihihi:
This makes the third NEW rear tire that has taken a dump within 1000 or miles...Dunlop and Bridgestone. Imma startin to think it ain't the tars....must be sumptin else. Perhaps the friggin CRAP that's all over the roads around this dump..... :rant:

Problem for me seems to be that bike tires just do NOT seem to handle ANY kind of debris from the road....no puncture protection at all. I could prolly poke a ball point pen thru one by hand. Sure wish they made steel belted tires for bikes. If this crap keeps up, Imma goin to the dark side.... :ahem:

They are still in use, O-man.....at least when they actually DO patch something. Most of the time they just leave the holes wide open....gotta save the taxpayers money, dontcha know? :rant:
 
The radial bike tires I've looked at do NOT specify steel belts at all...they do reference Aramid belts, tho, which are heat-resistant and strong synthetic fibers.
The difference between a bias ply and radial is the way the belts are situated on the carcass. Bias tires have the belts going directly side-side, where a radial has them at overlapping angles from side-side.
I think a steel belted bike tire would prolly be pretty harsh riding, due to the stiffness of the sidewalls, for such a short sidewall. Idano... :headscratch:

I DO know I'm friggin tired(no pun intended) of having to buy rear tires for this turd every couple of months..... :crying:
 
So far my Metzler Lazertech is holding up (1000 miles +) to the rigours of our pot holes and the dreaded driveway, the only problem I have now is that I want to replace the front with a Metzler as the Shinko does seem a bit agricultural now. The good news for me is that Metzlers seem like good value when I compare the price from American Moto Tire to supply only ($135.59 USD). My tire guy supplied, balanced and fitted for $185 AUD so with exchange rate and fitting cost I don't feel so bad about not being able to get my cheap Shinko 230s from him. The one thing I will say Joel is make sure that you are running plenty of pressure (42 psi rear and 38 psi front) which will hopefully contribute to longer tire life. That said you can't always help shrapnel and that can be really frustrating, we have lost 2 new car tires over the years ( one from a flat blade screwdriver and the other from a 13mm wrench). maybe someone should send you a new gremlin bell. Fingers crossed for your next tire..
 
There was a thread a while back about real low flaps on the front helping prevent the damage to rear tires. I'd put a flap on the front fender that drags if I was riding there.
