This might sound stupid.....and look even stupider, but would it be possible to have a piece of vacuum hose/tubing secured to your ear while poking the other end around the fairing to narrow down the area where the noise might coming from?
Or you could just sing louder while you ride. :music3:

====================

Many, many years ago as a teenager I visited my grandfather in Arkansas, who ran a one-man mechanic’s shop where he repaired outboard, small, and auto engines, and he showed me how to use a “sounding stick” [for lack of a better term] like a stethoscope to locate errant engine sounds/problems. I thought he was kinda crazy at first when he put that dowel-like stick to his ear, but he demonstrated that he was able to isolate engine sounds from the overall clattering and background noise of the engine compartment. I was very impressed, and still am by his simple but effective resourcefulness.

So yeah, I think a "sounding hose" could work, but I doubt that I am skilled enough to ride, listen, diagnosis, and stay upright [ let alone in my driving lane! ] while undertaking the procedure. Great idea though, securing one end of the hose to my ear . . . especially when considering that it would be yet another excellent use for my blue painter’s tape!!

You would also be correct in that “my singing” would solve the problem, as my off-key, out of synch, variable rhythm would probably serve very effectively as a human noise-cancellation device. ;-}

I use this hose method to zero in on vacuum leaks and exhaust leaks.
The last time I flew was from California to Texas in 1999. I paid the extra $5 to watch the movie. Turned out that everybody got to "see" the movie, but for my $5 I got a piece of hose that pushed on to a nipple in the armrest of the seat, and split into 2 pieces for my ears. The sound was just as clear as headphones. :music3:

It wouldn't be all that uncommon to see me riding one handed. :moped:

Mr. Scdmarx, I think it is safe to say that you, sir, are (1) monkey clever, (2) slightly odd, in a good way[!}, (3) someone who values function before form, and (4) also someone we could learn much from . . . if we were neighbors, I would be mighty tempted to give you the opportunity to plug your vacuum hose into to your good ear, apply a liberal amount of stabilizing blue tape myself, and video tape you riding my bike up and down the highway as you heroically crawled all over it [Bonneville Salt Flat speed-run fashion!!} in order to locate my problem sound. Yes, I suspect you are just the man for the job. ;-)

Mr. Mwbill, as our mothers used to say to [and about] our 12 year old best-friends and partners-in-crime, “you are a bad influence on my boy and I‘m expecting much trouble from the two of you!” Therefore, we should not tempt Mr. Scdmarx [a nickname already suggesting some inclination for trouble] with anymore wobbly dangerous, riding acrobatics . . . especially now that we know that he is on dope. A condition, I must confess, that I know all too well as I dip into my trough of Rx pill compartments every day . . . the small and large, the white-yellow-blue-purple, the tablets-capsules-gelatins, the sprays, drops, and others that I’ve forgotten to take.

On the other hand, in our altered psychological states, maybe it would be a far-out, groovy, sort of yellow submarine trip . . . a la 1983 GL1100/sidecar/rolling 3-man/monkey mission to location a sound only one of us can hear . . . sure, why not, mothers don’t know everything, right? :party:
