Hello All!! Well, I am starting to work on my newly acquired 1982 GL1100 Interstate. Like some of you I found the oil level indicator a pain in the %$# to read. So I purchased a used dipstick but it didn't come with instructions and I am at a loss as to how it goes on.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Did yours come with any instructions? I believe it installs in the drain bolt hole. I'll just go see what I can come up with. I'm just surprised I couldn't find any "How-To's" online.

That is a rare find, it is not made anymore!! (And a good one at that!!) That dipstick is a side read dipstick. It bolts on at the (I believe) oil drain plug. The dipstick tube should reach sideways towards the valve cover making for a very easy way to check your oil! :clapping:

It mounts right under the oil filter housing and jc whitney has them in their catalog,as to availability,i dont know

I think it can come up through one of the lower fairing louvers.

~O~
I would try mounting it out the other side of the bike an see if it will go in that way.

Down like you have it looks like it would work fine but make sure to attach the top to something.
Even a couple zip ties to the engine guard, somethin, Otherwise is could drop down while riding.

Should it look like this?

Nope, it goes the other way, not under the oil filter.

The one on my '80 comes out the front

The dip sticks goes on the drain bolt. It runs on the left side of the bike up through the lower fairing vents. It does not stick out of the vents but is just barely inside the vent so you CAN reach it through the vent to check the oil level.

You need 2 crush washers on each side of the bolt-one next to the engine and one on the outside of the bolt. If not used you will have an oil spot under your bike.

It does not go up the center like the pic back yard posted. That is a different stick from what you have.

Install and measure your oil you put in. run the engine to circulate the oil through the block and filter. Then mark the stick where your oil level is at--whether on center stand or side stand-wherever you will be checking your oil before riding .

I have one of these on my 82 and it sits just below the side fairings above the engine guards. My bike has chrome louver add-ons. I am not fond of it as it tends to get loose and leak a little. I would like to know there to get new seals for it.

If someone can measure the size of these crush washers, I bet I have a box full of them. Honda uses them on a LOT of stuff on the cars, especially transmission cooler lines. If the ones for these dipping stick tubes matches the ones I have, we have a lifetime supply. :good:

M14 is the size I bought...here is how it looks now. I will put It all back together once I get the starter in.

Otay, but I need the actual measurements to match it up to what I have, as I have many different sizes.
