well look what I found, I can't find any listing for generator cover hole cap, starting a new google search now.

Like Dan said use a screw driver, center punch or chisel near the outside edge and tap the cap undone hitting in the direction to unwind. You may be able to scribe a smaller size wrench onto the ground up nut so that you can file it to fit. You could also grind a slotted groove for a right angle flat blade screwdriver, just make sure that you oil up the threads and the oring when you re tighten ( not too tight).

we closed up garage last night with the cap still firmly seated where it was

we're going to have to figure out something for getting this apart, wil try your suggestions, ticking me off that there is really no way to grab to it. I did tap around the edge with screwdriver in a counterclockwise direction, no luck yet, trying to pry that thing off (though damaging the cap has already been done) damaging the threads is something I need to avoid, this is proving a huge chore.

had an idea though: I think I will put a condom over it when I put the new one on hoping that will be thin enough to fit yet strong enough to prevent the metal on metal contact
 
I use Anti-seize/ Never- seize on pretty much everything as it prevents the material growing or bonding together. You will also be surprised how well a large o-ring can bond 2 parts together. I don't believe a screwdriver is the best tool to tap off the cap. I usually use a center punch to make a positive point to anchor a blunt chisel to. I don't know if you can get a small hammer in there but if you can shock the cap all the way around the threads that will help loosen it for the chisel vice grips etc. Most people don't put enough pressure in the vice grips especially on aluminium and that is why they slip and grind off more. I like to lock them on in one point and then release them and tighten in the same point and re lock before trying to undo the item. If you have two people maybe one can place pressure with the vice grips and the other tap the cap with the screwdriver/ chisel at the same time. Good Luck!! :salute:

we opened up the garage door, I already had a medium vise grip (which we couldn't find last night) in hand from my house, walked over grabbed the round bolt and spun it off. f--- me if it wasn't dang near finger tight, and I know the amount of leverage I put on that sucker last night.

Anyway on to the next part and I'm glad I didn't have to go much farther that to get this thing off. I ended up buying from a different supplier than Dan suggested because I found the item after taking te product number from his link for $2 higher price and $9 less shipping cost if I remember right on amazon

timing belts on. timing one tooth off on left side. tensioners back off, timing belts on again, repeat three times, I finally grabbed the pulley on the left side and 'rewound' it backwards then placed the belt and when it snapped back forwards it was lined up perfect.

it's all gravy from here on out. I might curse myself for saying that....
 
timing: dead on
belt tension: dead on

can I take the covers with the radiator on? how do I run the engine until hot to check the belt tension again once hot?
 
Tough to get the covers off and on with the radiator in place (especially when it's HOT) but it can be done.
Leave the lower radiator bolts out which might help it to move forward a bit.
 
should I straighten these find out here?

spark plug tip has a 'cap' it won't twist off by hand, new on left old on right, what do I do here?

pliers made short work. anyhow now I was turning the key to on and blew this thirty amp right at the battery, never seen a fuse like that before.. being as dumb as I am I grabbed the piece I took off the spark plug and bridged it across, blew again, why I thought that wouldn't happen after i changed nothing is something I can't figure out.

I'm wondering whether my ground at the front end is screwing everything up. I might be grounding to something hot, why is it hot I don't know but I guess it is only with key on?
