I thought the Chevy Volt was full and only electric but it's not.
It has a gas generator to recharge it.

On just electric it will go only 35 miles.
The Chevy site "says" you can run it for $1.50 per day, I'm guessing that's if you drive it no more than the 35 miles, they don't quite say.

If it does cost only $1.50 to drive 35 miles that would be like getting 70 miles per gallon at $3.00 per gallon.

Not bad IF that's all you drive because over that the mpg drops to 35-40 highway but I also wonder about the battery life.
If they are being drained and recharged 5 days a week, from what I understand about batteries is cycling like that will reduce it's life span.

I commend Chevy for trying but I think the Volt will be a flop.

Randy made a good point to start with. How is plugging your fancy-schmancy E-lectric car in to your wall outlet at home gonna save you any cash, if you're still paying for the electricity? It's still money going out of yer pocket for transportation. Full electrics are only meant to be commuter cars anyway...not barn burners on the freeway. And...when time comes to replace the batteries, is paying almost the same for batteries as you paid for the car really gonna be worth it? No.
The real push for electrics & hybrids is emission control...not saving the driver money. :head bang:
Which was predicated and still is pushed by the false belief in Global warming. Hogwash! When we were kids we were told crude oil was decayed fossils. Hence fossil fuel and that we'd soon run out. According to them at the time by today we should be almost out of oil. Yet we have now thousands of oil deposits laying dormant that we know of and the mental midgets have placed out of reach. I'm betting oil is a natural resource that renews itself over time. Just as forests do if left alone.

yes it realy dont make sense to think that a huge portion of plant and animal life sinks down and away from decay....being a farmer i know better and in nature or living in the woods like i do nothing makes it pass the top soil that nature can recycle ....the top has always renew the top and the deep will renew the deep ....this whole ideal the scientist have come up with is about like the big bang and evolution its something to debate over but none of it can be considered fact....just to many holes in it ....over the long haul the batting average for science is dismal at best ...id say .010 not very good batting....theres as much hipocracy in science as there is in religion or gov ....

Yes seriously. Have we run out of trees? Water? Rocks? Diamonds? Are they still mining gold, copper, silver, iron, coal? Name one natural resource we as human have actually depleted. Go ahead google it. :laptop:

Do you have a time frame in mind about how quickly the oil will renew?

Well let's agree the scientists may have been partly correct in saying it is fermented fossils. They were organic material that has decomposed and changed to somehow become oil. Not unlike the old stills used by bootleggers. Maybe this process does take millions of years. However. Organic materials decay and are absorbed by this wondrous planet every millisecond of every day. On the entire worlds surface including that covered with water. So my belief is that is in continuous renewel. As to how it happens I doubt even the best scientists know for sure. Scientists by definition tend to be very narrow minded as a group. Preferring to study things they can isolate. No surface of our planet is entirely barren of life. Not the driest desert or the coldest ice cap.

I believe no matter what we do our planet will take care of itself.

If that crude needs to be there to sustain something else then it will do what needs to be done.

Just my opinion.

We don't really know where petroleum originates from. There are different schools of theory, but they are open ended. Personally, I tend to feel that advancements in technology has enabled the discovery of reservoirs, both reachable and unreachable, and I don't see us using it all up any time soon. I also can't help feel that controlled mining is the way of controlling availability, which controls price to the end user. Why are we so dependant on arab petroleum and not our own, is quite obviuosly a matter of politics. Controlled mining makes petrollium such a highly valued global commodity. It's about the money. Same reason the U.S. is in the drug business. And the prison business. All this "hoopty-hoo" about global warming, running out of natural resources, and the war on drugs are all smoke screens. Governments have to create new agencies to scrape up all the money to be made.

And that's the truth! :cheeky:

Seems everything can be blamed on the hippies, the martians, the mexicans, and the californians. :beg:

I just wish more people would focus a little more on controlling their own house.

At heart, I would describe myself as a commune-ist. Not to be mistaken with communist. I hate money and wish there was no such thing. Unfortunately, it's a neccessary evil. I would much rather see everyone work together for a common society. Plumbers, mechanics, carpenters, 'puter geeks, farmers, teachers, etc. The harvest divied up evenly. Everyone raise their kids to have a pure attitude. Greed and self centeredness would not be rewarded with personal gain. Nobody gets used as a stepping stone, and nobody gets a free lunch. There will be no need for Cain to murder Able. At night we all make smores and sing along at the camp fire.
Just as soon as I win the lottery and purchase my island, I will make this the law, punishable by banishing. I will most likely need to build up a military force to defend the island. And there will be much need for enough fresh paved roads to ride out goldwings. Of course, this will mean taxes for everyone. Which means we will have to print money so the people can pay their taxes. And the money will be worthless unless we somehow enter the world trade market. Ahhh, oil. That's it! My army will hijack Kuwait. No, wait.....it's been tried. How about if we grow tobacco, become famous for our fine cigars, then strike a deal with a stronger government for finacial support! No, wait....that's been tried, too. Too many eyes in the sky. Boy, this is tough! No wonder mankind can't come up with a perfect plan to save themselves! :ahem:

The Pilgrims tried that. They nearly starved. Human nature must be rewarded for work and laziness comes far too naturally.

I like that. It lays it out there.

I am not a fan of prisons for profit. As soon as prisons are designed to make a profit, you have a group of people who have a self interest in keeping prisons full. I am liberal, generally, but I am no bleeding heart. I recognize that there are bad people who need to be in prison, but the US has the highest incarceration rate in the world. I think that people who are willing to do others harm, should be in prison, but there are an awful lot of folks in prison for victimless crimes.

Boy, this thread is wide ranging.

I was joking about the hippy thing. Sometimes I get tired of fighting and need a time out.

Good point! I totally agree.

And the reason is because something is missing.

There are some basic needs that a man must have. He can't help it. These needs are manufactured into him.
He must have a dream. A desire. A goal. Something to work for/towards. There must be a prize waiting for him at the finishline. His trek toward that prize must fulfill his need to explore and his need for adventure, which includes the need to be challenged and to conquer, to taste victory. All the movies, stories and fairytales, they are all about good vs evil. Cops and robbers, heros vs villains, white knights vs black nights. These adventures appeal to us because they are born from our inner needs. Man has a need to share his adventure with a companion. He must conquer evil and rescue the damsel. Because he was made for companionship. Ya, a good dog is nice, but just can't fill the need to rescue his damsel and ride off into the sunset together. He has a need to feel respected by his damsel. If his damsel argues with every decision he makes, he will inturpret this as disrespect for his leadership. He needs to feel he is repected, most importantly by his companion, but also by others around him. A man also needs to feel he is responsible. As in a good provider, a good stewart, a good leader, a good follower, and the ability to present himself to a higher rank with a clear conscience. Yes, a higher rank. If it's lonely at the top, it's because something is missing at the top. I don't believe man was ever intended to be at the top. He needs to show accountability. It's just something that can't be helped. It's the way he's put together. A man also needs to feel he is adequite. Capable. Take on a challenge, conquer and build. The need to look back and see accomplishment.
I won't claim to have it all figured out, but I truely believe that if I could only stay focused on accomplishing these basic needs, and all at the same time, you couldn't hold me back and there wouldn't be a lazy bone in my body. And this time I'm not kidding.

Humor me. It's raining outside again and I'm stuck at the computer. :head bang:
