If it's a timing issue it's probably the vacuum advance leaking. That would also affect the carbs. Old fuel smell could be heating varnish from previous leaks under the carbs. I'd check the vacuum advance diaphragm and vacuum line.

Freebird is still sleeping. I was wondering where the vacuum advance diaphragm and line are located. Thanks for your advice.

On the back of the engine about center. You have to remove the rear tire and it's easier to work on if the swingarm is removed also. You can do and easy test of the vacuum advance by unplugging the vacuum line from the #3 carb and capping it off, tape up the end of the vacuum line you just removed and secure it out of the way. By doing this the engine is running strictly off the mechanical advance and it eliminates the vacuum leak that the carb would be having if the diaphragm were leaking.

 Oh brother that sounds like she would be down a tad bit unless it is easier than it sounds! Good thing the race car is pretty close to racin except for the weather. I hope to see him get the bike running good so we can meet you in August Backlander. :salute:

Try capping off that vacuum line on the #3 carb, it's easy to do and you won't hardly be able to tell the difference, then wait to work on the vacuum advance this winter when you do the other work. Yeah, hope ya'll can make it down to joe's, I can't hardly wait for the meet so I can meet everybody.

first thing id do is easy ...un plug the vacume advance and plug up vacume feed from carbs ...and see if this changes how it runs ....if the canister is leaking it like a bad hose with a hole in it ...the 1100s havw a mechanical advace too ...if it aint stuck it will run better than with leaking vacume on carbs would ...try that

mike beat me

He found it. The hose was in sad shape. Plugged it off and took a short trip down the road. He said it sounded better. Had company show up to cool off in pool, so didn't get more done than that today. I know he wants to get better plugs to plug off vacuum. Will keep you informed of progress. I want to be able to get a room in French Lick :beg: BTW how does food etc. go on one of these get togethers?

Last time we'd shop and chip in. Cooked over fires or in Joe's kitchen. Basically just took care of one another. Maybe a restaurant or two.

Cool! I'm not above helping out cooking or whatever. Kinda wish it was closer and a place for the motorhome so we would have a place to sleep and I could have all my cooking equipment handy, but I want the experience of the ride down too. It would be my first trip on the bike besides short ones around here. Guess if we get to go I will have to "wing" it. Sorry I had to do it. :smilie_happy:

yes winging it worked pretty well last yr ...im way out of my league as 5 start host ...in the meet thread there a list patty posted of all the motels and lake cabins out here ...theres plenty of room ...lets hope mother plays nice

I hear ya about ol mother nature! She didn't want to give us any rain last year and this year she doesn't want to stop the waterworks. Dadgum women anyway. lol

This topic has gone way off what it started but what the hey, we're having fun right.

burtha, just wanted to say if it comes down to it there's room in Joe's driveway for a motorhome if you decide that way.

:clapping: Freebird road her to work today. Will see how she is doing when he gets home. Hope to be picking up a different seat tonight that he bought on ebay. Who would have guessed the person lives only a few miles away! I guess it would be cheaper to ride the bike down and not have to pay for fuel in the camper. Hoping she is running better. Isn't it amazing what fuel issues will do!

the bike ride is nice ,but if you want to bring a camper there is a camp site on the next road down from joes that can handle campers.. don't know what they charge . but it's only like five minutes from joe's.
