Front Fork Piston Ring

Hey Gents,

New to the forum...transplanting a 78 GL1000 into my 78 CB750. Pulled the forks apart last night to change the seals and noticed that the piston rings on the oil piston are junk. The part number, according to cmsnl, is 51437-371-003, but it seems it has been discontinued. I've scoured the web to no avail. I found, on this forum, another part # 51437-KAZ-003. Partzilla shows that it fits a 1980 and up, but not a 78. Can anybody verify if this part will fit or point me in the direction of where I can get the correct part #?

The #9 you're referring to is for a 750A and I need the piston ring for a 78 GL1000. Are you saying that the piston ring for the 750A is interchangeable with the GL1000? The part #'s are different?

Sorry...my bad! I looked up the 750 after mis-understanding your post. Different rings for sure. Good luck with your search...there's probably someone here who knows where to get 'em.

There are junk yards in California that have tons of wings. Search the Web, they have a system where you tell them the parts you need and they email you back with availability.

Fox Valley Cycles had a set, although they state they're for a 76, the part # is the same. Phew!!

78 cb750 is a chain drive isn't it? Seems like a very ambitious project to swap in a shaft drive motor. Do start a build thread and post lot's of pictures. I'm sure others besides myself want to see this build and help what we can along the way. Oh yeah! Welcome to the fun!

Guess I left out that I was transplanting the front end out of the wing...my apologies.

Hmmm. Okay disappointed a bit but still interested. Part wing is good enough here!

It's actually not that exciting since it's nearly a direct bolt in. CB750 tapered steering bearings and good to go. I'll need to test the steering stops once it's all together as I may need to add a little bit to them, but aside from that it's too easy to get an extra 2mm in fork diameter and dual disc brakes.

Good thing to reduce the amount of turn angle as I can't believe how far you can move the bars on the Rats Nest in comparison to my CBRs
