Ha, ha... That about sums it up, huh? :)

Well, Ive gotten some work done on the bike. Not as much as I had hoped for, but the weekend is not over yet, either.

I continued with the front end strip down. I made some discoveries that I would like to share with you.

Here is one side of the timing belts:

The belts themselves actually look to be in pretty good shape (don't worry, I will be replacing them). It's the rust on the tensioner wheel that concerns me. Can that be cleaned up, or should I just get new?

When I got the pipes off, I took a quick peek into the exhaust ports. Here is what I found:

I am thinking that the top end is wasted and the cylinders will need to be honed out. (Can that be done with engine in frame?) The good news is that I checked the oil dipstick and the oil on it was nice and clear and golden, so I might be in luck with the bottom end.

I will do a search for this, too, but does anyone have a good design for an engine stand for these beasts if I decide to yank the engine and drop the rest in storage while I work on it?

yes but a hone is not good to use on boxer motors as the bottom side of cylinders is where everything is the worse and hones can really cause damage ... by hand is best way ...thats what i do in cases like this

That idler pulley can be cleaned up however you like, steel wool, wire brush, fine sandpaper.
When you have it off, give it a spin while holding the bracket. It should have a smooth feel.

New belts will polish that pulley in no time and the corrosion and soot in the exhaust ports will clear itself when it's running right. Just be sure the valves are closing right and not sticking
