I'm stumped, took it apart, no water, rust, pitting, bore is smooth as babies butt, cups look perfect and are soft, nothing stopped up. Now why won't it pump fluid, remember, the reservoir was still half full of fluid when I tore it down. You can work the pedal full throw, rod works, just won't pump. Is there something in there that bypasses pressure other than the pressure diff valve you can't mess with? I don't know of anything. It won't work front or rear calipers. Got me confused.

i'm not clear if you are losing fluid?

nevertheless, you can certainly have a random internal problem whether there is an external leak or not,

had that one time with a nicked O ring, brakes were completely normal, no leaks but every once in awhile went soft and to the floor

Thanks 82a. I'll go through the m/c again.

if everything known checks out, my guess is could be something in that sealed proportioning unit
 
I know they say not to do it but has anyone ever went inside that sealed proportioning unit or know of a thread where someone has repaired one ? I'm just curious like that, on how things work.
 
I've never read or heard of anyone going into one, only once someone trying to get one that leaked to seal.

When I first got my 83 with linked brakes, I bled the lines after putting on SS lines.
As I was bleeding the rear, I could feel in the pedal as bit's of crap passed through the proportioning valve.
Some also when bleeding the front but not as much.

I could be wrong but I don't think there's any kind of "valve" in there. I think it's actually ports with different sized
orifice for front and rear.
 
I put a spare m/c on mine today and thought I could bleed the caliper without removing the hardbag but with the extras I added below the bag, it's not possible. That's a job for tomorrow. Thought about tearing into this one to see how it's made. Thanks for the info.
 
:Egyptian: Well we got rear brakes again, all bled out and the luggage is all back on, I even cleaned the windshield and checked the fluids and tire pressure. All the news channels are predicting perfect temps and weather for riding this weekend and the fall colors are supposed to be peaked out also so I'm ready to take a stroll up thru the hills (Arkansans call them mountains but they ain't never been out west) :smilie_happy: I know I threatened her but she does have all her clothes back on. That shameless hussie. It's the tequila dang it!!!! :smilie_happy:
 
Something to do with rear m/c. I put a good spare one I had on it and it works fine now. I attempted to tear into the broke one after noticing that the seal cap on the proportioning end was cocked sideways and you could see there was a small amount of fluid underneath it and some trash

. You can see how it's sitting high on left side and sunk in on the right side. I was going to open the valve up but can't figure out yet, how to get what looks like a pressed in lock ring out

. I read somewhere that someone had one leaking from that seal cap and they pressed it back in and had no further problems with theirs so I pressed this one back in for the time being. There is an o-ring also underneath the plastic reservoir fitting on top of the m/c that was leaking so I replaced it. Those two small leaks could explain some of the loss of fluid but it doesn't explain the loss of pedal since the reservoir never got below the add mark. What's weird is when you operate the plunger by hand it will squirt fluid across the room. I got to figure out how to get into that proportioning valve when I get time so for now it goes on the shelf with a tag, "rainy day project".
 
It is great when you finally find the actual problem rather than pulling your hair out over all the possible scenarios :good:
