If I remember correctly, those rubber parts have (for lack of a better term) teeth that slip over the carb. If those teeth tear or break, no amount of boiling or vasiline will help and the clamp will not be able to seal up the gap. You may want to check them to make sure you don't have a bigger problem.

..I might have missed it, but did you change your oil too, after the gas/carb issues. All the gas running down into your crankcase thur the pistons rings. I think i still have a set of those Randaks clamps, there new too. It was posted but maybe be deleted now.

A good layer of vaseline will soften the rubber but not right away. Are you talking the end fitting to carbs or the end fitting to the heads? If it's the carb end maybe car hose clamps can be tightened a bit more to seal?
Yes, it is the end going onto the carbs. I'm going to put vaseline on them & I called Pettersen Motorsports here in Chico today & they have some stainless steel Gator Brand Clamps that won't damage the rubber & will do the job.
TNX for you input.

OMG I forgot about the gas that was in the cylinder for some time. Yes, I will change the oil tomorrow. And TNX but I think I have some clamps locally.

I just rebuilt the carbs & the rubber looks good on all 4 but they have been sitting for many yrs. Not bad, just old.

I'll take those Randak clamps if you still have them, I'm doing a head job this spring, just let me know how much and who to pay, thanks.

Okay... I changed the oil & I put Vaseline on the rubber & used the gator clamps & have stopped the air leaks at the top but now I have to change the O-ring again because they are now leaking. I'm not sure if is because I have taken them off & put them back on so many times now or what but I can drip starting fluid on the top of the intakes & the RPMs will not go up but if I spray down low on the intakes it will increase the RPMs. So I guess I'll go buy new ones in the next day or two.

Did you tight the intakes first or the intake clamps? Intake horns usually seal best if tightened to the heads first.

yes when putting racks on it is best to me ... it seems ...to mount them and go around tightening the intake horns down to head while the upper boots are still loose ...so there no binding at all on them while tightened to head ..you don't want to tighten them to much ...you don't want to mess the integrity of how its design .. it held down by the bolts just to seal ..it don't have to hold pressure just seal ... over tighten just causes failure of the o-ring ... I have been working on wings for years and as of now I have never bought a intake o ring .....anyway once horns are tighten at head ... then tighten clamp on intake horns ....it really couldnt be set up any better ... whole wheat cereal box gasket will work there also ....LOL...ive never done one there but I know it will work ... I sure have done it enough at the coolant hook up ... seems those gasket don't make through disassembly to well

Okay, I did tighten the clamps before the bolts. I'll go back out & do it the other way. Also I was told Hondabond High-Temp Silicone Liquid Gasket will work but I will just try to tighten in the correct order.
If that doesn't help has anyone tried Hondabond HT? And is it like the other High Temp RTV?

I've had 2 sets of carbs racks, both had flattened O rings. There is quite a noticeable difference from new ones.
In a pinch I would make gaskets using the thicker carb gasket material that comes in a roll, no sealant.

I haven't tried the hondabond and as a rule do not recommend using rtv on any motors. Too many times I've had it release and come off in strings. I've had my rack off three times now and put a light coat of vaseline on the old rings and they still seal very nicely. I also make sure the mating surface is as clean as possible. Using gaskets is not a bad idea if you want to be absolutely sure.

Whenever I use new O rings, I spray them down with silicone spray before I install them, whether it be a motorcycle or a refrigerating machine, tends to keep them supple!

Got to have the right size of course, with very clean receiving parts.

I did put vaseline on the o-ring (and they are new) but I but I still have not had time to pull them off again & tighten the bolts then the clamps. Also I will not waste my time or money on the Hondabond. TNX for all the good info.
